I am considering purchasing a Hero Mech from the flash sale, and have shortlested a few that from looking at them in the store seem to have good high mounted ballistic slots:

Esprit de corps, void, bandit, bounty hunter 2, legend killer, dao breaker, chironex, and vanguard.

are any of these similar in ballistic hardpoints to the Jagermech or Shadowhawk?

The Esprit has potentially 2 Ballistic hardpoints mounted high atop his shoulders. Riflemen are very similar to Jagers in their hardpoints. The Bounty Hunter has a single high mounted ballistic, goes better with a big gun.
But you can check them out without buying. From the store, mark the mech you want to try and then on the lower right, click "view in mechlab". There you can play around with different loadouts and go to the testing grounds.

As an omnimech, Vanguard can be armed with any arm, leg, side torso or head pods available on another Sun Spider variant. You can keep the stock pods, sure. Or you can install SNS-D left arm and left torso and get your dakka mech with bonus ECM.

Although to be honest if you're looking for a dakka hero then my recommendations go out to Sleipnir (2xUAC5+2xUAC10), Black Widow (4xUAC5) or High Roller (2xUAC10).

Vanguard have high-ish main hardpoints right below cockpit. Not as good as Jagermech, but still pretty good for poking. It's one of the best mech's for dual AC/UAC 10, thanks for good hardpoints, sufficient tonnage, high speed and good quirks.

Esprit de Corps have pre-installed high ballistic hardpoint, and being omnimech, can get another one on the second shoulder. It's good hardpoints for poking Jagermech-style, with less profile. Just be aware that stock slots are pretty atrocious, so you most likely lose quirks on re-arranging omnipods for something more sensible.

Void is kinda resemble Shadow Hawk with hardpoints location, but it more energy boat with ballistic in the torso. It can run some close-combat builds on LBX and heavy lasers with MASC for added maneveurability, but there are more useful mechs for both brawling and AC-poking, mainly because of huge hitbox.

Bounty Hunter is mostly inferior to MAD-3R. Slower, less durability and with just single hardpoint you will be forced to rely on low-slung hands as your main weapon.

Rifleman dosen't have enough tonnage or quirks to compete with Jagermech, it's simply inferior version 5 tons lighter. If you want one, Legend Killer would be better choice simply because of structure quirks.
Chironex have tonnage and can make some good mixed ballistic/energy builds, but it's slow as molasses and no durability bonuses. Glass cannon as it is.
You really will be better with Warhammer/Night Gyr as true gunboats instead of those two.

Bandit... no, just no. Fixed engine without Endo on 60 ton chassis dosen't give enough tonnage to play with cannons, big torso hitboxes, no quirks. Hellfire can try to play with guns thanks to MASC, Ebon Jaguar can use over-the-top hardpoints and tonnage, but Mad Dog is simply unsuitable platform.
