Some 'Mechs that I would suggest:
Light:
1. Wolfhound (WLF-2; "Grinner")
2. Adder (OmniMech)
3. Piranha (PIR-2; "Cipher")
4. Javelin (JVN-11A)
5. Firestarter (-K; -A; -S)
Medium
6. Vapor Eagle (three models)
7. Huntsman (OmniMech)
8. Arctic Wolf (both BattleMech and OmniMech)
9. Assassin (AN-23; ASN-21)
10. Crab (all models are quite similar)
Of course, there are many other Light and Medium 'Mechs that might work for you. Remember, it is important for "you" to have fun piloting your 'Mech.
I could name other dozen of 'Mechs that I enjoy piloting, even though some would frown that those 'Mechs are "obsolete" or "non-optimal".
IMPORTANT:
PGI gives away a pretty sweet Medium 'Mech: Hero Wolverine "Quarantine", so do not forget to claim one:

There is a thread where you can describe your experience with "Quarantine", if you wish:

Mostly play Lights and Mediums.
Mobility is my playstyle.
Recommendations:
- Assasine (ASN-DD) - XL240 | 1 AC10 | 2 ER MED | 2 Jump | ECM
On the Skill Tree go near full Survival, Rest what you prefere.
This thing is very sturdy with the ECM combined!
- Shadow Hawk (SHD-2K) - XL320 | 2 ER PPCs | Jumps
I went for Jump Skills but is not necessary. The cockpit level hardpoints work like a charm.
Jump - Drop - Shoot - Hit
- Commando (COM-2D) - XL210 | 3 SRM2 | ECM with stealth
Don't stop, just run and gun until the big guys are all dead!
- Osiris (OSR-SE) - XL210 | 4 Med Pulse | 2 MGs | 4 Jumps
Really awesome mobility and pin point damage with the pulse! That guy surprised me with performance! Open them up and crit all the weapons (flying out of nowhere, surprise m.... no AC/20 anymore!)
And a bunch of others:
Hunchback with Gauss (classic, but the turn rate is just awesome to shield)
Jenner with 6 Med Laser and jumps
Vapor Eagle with 2 UAC10, Cicada with UAC10 and ECM
med pulse laser Crab with max speed (feels like a knight on a horse with a lance CHAAAAAARRRGE)
RAC5 Bushwacker with MRM20.
cheers

From personal experience, i would recommend the Assassin ASN-23 with 3xSRM6 for high speed short range backstabbing, Or the Bushwacker BSW-X1 with 2 RAC5 for medium range fun, it's also quite sturdy with nice hitboxes and low profile, but not very fast.
If you haven't tried it yet, i would also suggest the Quickdraw hero, the QKD-IV4; with 2xMRM30, quite movile for a heavy mech, and bery powerful too!
