OS: Windows 10 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i5 @ 3.2GHz
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series
RAM: 8GB

I just started playing a few days ago and ever since I started I have been having lots of lag. I tried using the lowest system settings, the lowest resolution, and turning off things like damage glow. But I am only getting at most 16FPS. Even the GUI on the home screen after sign-in is lagging for me.

Also, I can't get the game to use DirectX 11 even though it is installed and works for other games.

I would appreciate some help. I like this game and I am trying to learn to play it better, but the lag is interfering with that.

I'm pretty sure it is impossible to play MWO with GPU this old. Sorry dude.
Even official minimum is Ati Radeon HD 5670, which is much more powerful than your GPU.

Yeah, Radeon HD 4300/4500 is not even a DX11 card. Time for an update.

I guess that explains why my CPU usage runs from 30-50% while playing. And my GPU usage is 0%. So basically DirectX 9 is using software rendering because my GPU doesn't support the feature level required by the game?

Is this a desktop or laptop/netbook?

Adding more info but saving post now.

1. System Power Options set to High Performance (if set at Power Saver or Balance, it will also affect CPU/GPU speeds)
2. Dependent on how old system is check/clear out dust build up on heatsinks or exhaust ports(laptop)
3. In Settings, change change from DX11 to DX9 (it sounds like it is already there, but making sure)
Just to make sure have last set of dx 9c files, download the redistribution package, unpack it in a good location for you to reach then run the dxsetup.

https://www.microsof...ls.aspx?id=8109

4. Okay, the last driver update for that series of cards from AMD was a long time ago. Windows 10 can update it with a default driver.

Quote

The last operating system supported using the AMD drivers was Microsoft Windows® 8 with the AMD Catalyst 13.1 driver package, which can be downloaded from the AMD Driver page : http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Driver support for these products under Windows® 8.1 and Windows® 10 is only available via Windows Update. Please enable Windows Update to allow it to automatically detect and install display driver version 8.970.100.9001

It is a desktop PC. I have cleaned the heatsink recently. It has 4 cooling fans (CPU fan, GPU fan, main fan, and PSU fan). The game is set to use DX9. I have installed the newest DirectX 9 version (June 2010 I believe).

I will try adjusting the power settings and updating the device driver for the graphics card.

Also, there doesn't appear to be a heat issue since the air coming out is cool. But for some reason the CPU is doing all the rendering even though other software including new games uses the GPU to render everything. For example, I can play the Minecraft demo for Windows 10 with no lag at all. That is why I don't understand what is going on.

Brand and model of the desktop, and a full desktop or a SFF (small form factor)? Or generate dxdiag file and post the top section of it, from the beginning to to the sound card entries. Is your CPU i5-650 (Duo-Core Hyperthreaded -no specific name for GPU) or a i5-3470 ( Quadcore w/ Intel® HD Graphics 2500)?

And how are you verifying it is not using the AMD? And as a reminder most Intel CPU also have their own built-in GPU, Intel GPU. If the AMD GPU is not rendering MWO then it is the built-in GPU.

https://mwomercs.com...ntegrated-gpus/

Looking at the stats between AMD 4300 or 4500 vs the Intel 2500, the 2500 is slightly faster than the AMD. If your cpu is the 650 w/its GMA no name GPU it is likely neck to neck with the AMD. You are getting the best there is with your setup.

If your system is the i5-3470, it may be worth it to update the GPU, even if it is a SFF, though some care will need to be made to when making a purchase. It sounds like your system is a prebuilt, a manufacturer's system. If your system has the duo-core, I am not sure if a minor GPU upgrade will be worth it. The other component that would have to be reviewed is the PSU.

Providing potential avenues, dependent on information provided and availability of components and funds.

My PC is a normal desktop PC. Not the small kind. And it was made from spare parts that a friend of my dad had. It was the best I could afford at the time. It is an HP Pavilion Elite HPE with some parts swapped out. I think the integrated video card and network card were replaced.

This is the built-in GPU, it is part of the CPU (see below)

Okay.. BN474AV-ABA HPE-150t - below is the motherboard info on HP.

https://support.hp.c...ument/c02014355

It is limited on what GPU can be installed in it, since it only has a PCI Express x16: 1. Bios is 10 years old, predating UEFI. Thus even a recent low end card would not work, from reading multiple threads concerning the motherboard itself. The best GPU you could put into it would be a Nvidia 710 but with MWO you would only see a slight improvement of maybe 5 FPS, and that is based on player feedback from older threads here.

https://smile.amazon...73543968&sr=8-2

Unfortunately, I do not see a path for you to take that would greatly improve MWO playability with this system. Time to save up for a newer system. And when I say newer system, it does not need to be $1000+ amount, but you would not be able to reuse anything from that system.

It looks like you've got a 512 MB video card (with DDR2, DDR3 or GDDR3 memory, which are rather slower than GDDR5 which gas been standard for some years now) that's using your system memory to compensate for its' limited VRAM (BAD).

From what I can research, it looks like this was a low-end card at the time of its' introduction and isn't much better than the integrated video built into your CPU (may even be sligthly worse).

Wrong on that count. Since when do Intel CPUs use AMD integrated graphics?

I have to disagree on that count as well.

According to UserBenchmark, this board can be (and has been) successfully paired with a GTX 750 TI, which would be a massive improvement over what OP has: https://www.userbenc...A-HPE-150t/2039

The "big" issue would be power specification of PCI-E 1.0 . I understand that the way to work around it would be to get a card that takes auxiliary power connector straight from the power supply (and a power supply that can provide such, obviously).

The DMA is the intel GPU that is built-in/integrated... that is why I provided the cut/paste from his dxdiag.. which is listed below the AMD GPU.... /wink.

Nice use for the Userbenchmark, have to remember that one. As for the 750ti, from the threads I had reviewed, the number of threads of those who attempted to go that route could not get the card to work and had to settle for a 710.</div>

And I agree, it would be a huge improvement but would may require an older card, one that is at least hybridize UEFI, one that would work with native bios or UEFI, but it would also depend on the motherboard version.

The other issue, even from the userbenchmark, is the only i5-650 was tested with a AMD 4300, and HP website does not even list the i5-650 as part of the configuration.

https://support.hp.c.../c01976259#AbT0

This matches his setup setup. And since he said it was made from spare parts of a friend of his father, lots of parts could have been switched around. The HPE-150t is listed has having a 350w PSU while the HPE-240 is listed with a 300w PSU.

https://support.hp.c...ument/c02031797

And some of the 750-TI do require that aux 6-pin from the PSU, which the default HP PSU would not have said connection, then there is whether the card obtained will work with the legacy bios, or have the ability to switch between UEFI and legacy bios.

Okay, located one where a user was able to get a 750-TI to work with that motherboard, but we do not know the motherboard's version number.

https://pcpartpicker.com/b/WT9J7P

And I am fine providing the OP options, but only if prefaced by providing possible issues.

Removed the extra formatting /ugh

Um, no. :(
Look up "Direct Memory Access" and "Graphics Pre-Emption".
The Intel integrated video solution you're thinking of is Intel GMA, which is an onboard video chip. The i5-650's built-in video solution is Intel HD Graphics. Two different things, the motherboard specs even spell it outright.

AFAIK, there was a change in the power spec betwen PCI-E 1.0 and 2.0. If you were trying to feed that card from the slot alone, it would be insufficient. That's one

Which is why I advised replacing the PSU (if he's still using the stock one). As far as I can determine, the 150t's motherboard takes standard ATX power supplies.

I just collected better stats about what my PC is doing. Here's what it shows:

According to this, the CPU is only running about 18% and the GPU is running at about 98% when the game is just sitting idle on the home screen. Also, I can take a picture of what's inside my PC and post it if that would help. I actually had to replace my hard drive sometime around January.

without a GPU update, you'll never be able to run the game properly.

The issue has been identifying what GPU his clobbered together HP mfg motherboard/system would be able to handle, since it is comprised mostly of 10 year old HP components. MFG tend to use proprietary components, A Nvidia 750-TI off of ebay is at least $60, and a PSU to fit the case would be around around the same price. And if the OP is still low on funds, then purchasing components that may or may not work would be throwing money away he does not have, especially if he is not able to return said components.

1. PSU.. We would need the brand/model for the Power Supply Unit. Usually that info would be visible once the side case is off, on a PSU label. You can also take a pic of it and post it too.

You got this covered way better than I could, Tarl, I was just referring to the recent post by the OP. There's no need to analyze what's going on any further, because we already know where the issue lies.

I need some help figuring out which video card to buy. I took picture of my motherboard and PSU including the labels and sockets. I've only replaced broken parts before, so I have no idea how to figure out how to upgrade a part.

A view of everything.

Thing is, there are some concerns regarding what cards would work with your motherboard.
A GT 710 would still be an upgrade over what you've got, but I'm not convinced it's sufficient to run MWO anywhere near decently.
A GTX 750 or 750 Ti would be a substantial upgrade and would make your system a reasonable budget gaming rig, but not all models would work and you would have to replace your power supply as well, since if your motherboard is using PCI-E 1.0 it will probably not be within the power spec for cards meant to run over PCI-E 2.1 or 3.0 . Basically, you'd need a version of the card that would draw power directly from the PSU and a PSU that has the connectors to provide that power.

So far, the big elephant in the room is your budget for the upgrade and whether you feel comfortable making a gamble for an upgrade that might not work out.

You replace them more or less the same way. If you're upgrading a video card you will probably need to uninstall its' drivers and install new drivers from the manufacturer of whatever you upgraded to. Not very difficult, given that the video card market is down to pretty much AMD and Nvidia.

That large expansion slot is PCI-E x16, 1.0 if the specs of your motherboard are to be believed.

How much improvement do you think the GT 710 would be? Right now I get around 16FPS most of the time. It's playable, but it appears to drop frames or something especially when there's an all out battle with lots of people shooting.

In fact, I'm kind of getting used to the lag now. XD
