Here's my idea:

Forget tiers and any attempt to make a skill balance on the matchmaker. The key is just to prevent any one player from going on an extended loss streak.

Just give everybody a win/loss counter. Build teams based on only two things:

1. Tonnage (still matters to prevent one team from have 6 assaults and the other team 2)
2. W/L ratio.

So, if you have several losses in a row, you will likely be folded onto a team that has several players who just scored a W.

Likewise, if you just scored several W's, you will likely be teamed up with more and more players who have just had an L or several L's.

Simple, beautiful, easy.

A player's average match score is the best predictor for how they will perform in a match. If they keep that per mech class, then that's all they need to build balanced teams. A 400 match score is a 400 no matter which weight class the mech is in. Tiers are useful if we wanted to adjust match scores based on the combined average match score for the people in a match. You would multiply the calculated match score (as is calculated now) by the combined average match score of everyone in the match divided by the player's average match score. That way, people from lower "tiers" would get better match scores and those in higher "tiers" would get lower, since they played against less skilled players.

So getting 400 match score in SDR-5V Spider is as easy as getting 400 match score in Cyclops or Mad Cat Mk.II?
