I think introducing pilots is a good idea.
However it has to be inserted into the current game. So putting an extra long skill tree in would not be helpful.
There also has to be risk rewards. So what if the pilot was disposable, i.e. killable. And the entire design was around the idea that a pilot would be killed and you'd have to restart on a regular basis.
A short skill tree would be needed as then loss would mean something but not be crippling.
You could also give achievements for long lived pilots. This would encourage buying of more pilot slots.

No thank you. I am the pilot, and the mechs are the part that gets micromanaged.
