When it comes down to it, is defunding the police really a good idea?

Now I don't like cops very much to start with, so if your going to get rid of cops, get rid of them all. Highway, boarder, airport cops, mall cops, and then we can really have fun.

As one young lady said to me once that it's silly to have someone to tell you how fast you can drive or in which lane. First of all, common sense should be your guide, but then how many people just have a general lack of common sense in the first place. If these idiots had common sense, we would not have fail videos to sit back and laugh at.

Now prison guards are basically cops with a special role. If we get rid of cops, then we have to do away with the prison system. So what happens to the people in prison: do we let them starve, shoot them, or let them all out. Now the first two, is not ethical, or at least moral. The third option is not something you want either. Now someone is going to say why not? Let's take prisoner (F-I-N) name changed whom I know - he dragged an old woman down the road with his car. "Oh I'm sure he didn't mean it." Yes he did. Then there is prisoner (D2all) name changed: beat five people to death with a pipe. "Oh he just needs a good shrink, and just don't let him have a gun." He uses a pipe, and the third person he beat into mush was his shrink.

Like it or not, we are stuck with cops, because we need to have an element of control in society. Now there is one small area in America that has no cops, and it is the most dangerous place in the states. Your chance of being robbed, sexually assaulted, or murdered is quite high, and that' just for a brief visit. No running water, no electricity, trash, smell of death, no phone service, cell phones, no xbox or playstation, no computers, or anyone to call if you need help, even if your having a heart attack.

defund no, demilitarize yes. police are an important part of civilized society. the problem with the police forces is that you have a lot of adrenaline junkies with way to many toys. two things that when combined can lead to destructive results. on top of that police tend to be very fraternal and will always cover for each other, even when their behavior is abhorrent.

also intimidation is a huge factor, they always have body armor and armed to the teeth. intimidation causes a fear response that results in a lot of misunderstandings. maybe try a proportional response and stop assuming every person they talk to is a criminal (thats the judge's job). intimidation tactics are what criminals use, cops shouldn't be doing that.

i knew a guy who trained as a fire fighter, and they tell those guys from day one that they are expendable. they never put their own safety over that of those that they rescue. i wonder why the police dont do that. isnt their motto to protect and to serve?

I must agree with you. Having military vehicles and military grade weapons is over the top. The cops purchased a lot of tossed away vehicles after Desert Storm. Now I can understand having upgraded stuff for a bomb squad, but for the everyday officer, no.

Thank you for your imput.

it amazes me when a police officer who pulls me over and wants to give me a breathalyzer has to wait for another patrol to bring him the device, yet he's holding a fully auto C8 and his plate carrier is completely covered with 30 rounders

maybe its just me, but I feel like a breathalyzer is a more crucial tool for a police officer than an assault rifle (a real assault rifle), especially given the breathalyzer costs like 1/15th the price

Defund the police means not that the police gets no money, it means that parts of the budget goes to first responders who can handle a knife wielding person in state of mental upset without killing him.
At the moment many first responders refuse to talk to such persons until the police disarmed him.

Of corse those first responders need good equipment, like a vest that prevents stabbing. Such vest are common in use in Europe for fire fighters and ambulance personal.

German police is equiped with full auto MP5s since the 70s, sometimes even with the G3 (some states want to replace both with small calibre assault rifles after the Paris Terror Attacks). It's quite common to see them with that if something is going on. (political protests, ect...).

State police has APCs, and Federal Police have had even 7,62 mm machine guns for the APCs... not quite sure if they have those still since losing their combantant status.

defund the police means defund the police

the whole "but what it actually means...." is bs, if it actually means reallocate a small portion of police budget, then call it that. Otherwise you are just being used by people who actually want to get rid of police in modern society, which would be a disaster, when you espouse their slogan while thinking to yourself it means something else

if we really want to look at our policing and where it's headed I really think many of us could agree we need to "De-militarize the police", and we can easily re allocate funding used for APCs and fully automatic weapons (seriously, under what circumstances do we want police to use full auto weapons) towards mental health specialists, and additional training for officers

That was the reason why the German state police got full automatic sub machine guns:

And that is the reason why they want to replace them with small calibre assault rifles:

I can't really speak for Germany, but would it not make more sense to have police armed with semi auto firearms that they are very well trained at using?

It just seems like police shooting fully automatic weapons when they have an average hit rate around 30% with semi auto firearms is a recipe for collateral civilian deaths

Semi auto pistol is the standard side arm. Submachine guns are stored in police cars for stuff like mass shootings or terror attacks.
Police use usually soft core ammunition with low penetration on anything else than soft (human) targets to avoid collateral damage. Didn't work well if the traget hides behind a car / window / wall and shoots back with an assault rifle.

During high risk times (after terror attacks or during political protests) high risk areas (train stations, airports, christmas markets...) are patrolled by police with open carried SMGs.

Until 15 years ago it was common for the police to contain the situation and wait for SWAT to arrive, but after some school shootings they changed it to engage ASAP.
Stuff what was formerly only for SWATs like bullet proof wests & helmets should given out to each policemen (usually stored in the car).

i wonder if you actually read the thread. i didnt see anyone say that cops are ********. in fact this thread has been alarmingly civil.

perhaps a bit quick to escalate and to a point that is far beyond what the situation requires. in a world with terrorism and shootings, i kind of want them to have assault weapons in their trunk. but i want them to leave them there until the situation calls for it. we need a little more andy griffith and a little less john mcclane.

To add my two cents:

That these delusional mental patients would demand the police be defunded in favor of more useless social workers is a travesty, especially when their useful idiots in BLM and Antifa turn on them, and their very first instinct is to call 911 to save them from their own hubris..

How anyone is stupid enough to waste their time listening to these hypocritical dipshits is a mystery to me.

I am writing a song after reading these posts ; let me know what you think ;

Ice Cubes will float
On any mother father in a blue uniform
Just because I'm from the CPT, nice police are afraid of me
A young ninja on a mission
And when I'm finished, I am going for a bath.
Yo D, I got somethin' to say

Defund the police, defund-, defund-
Defund the police, defund-, defund-
Defund the police, defund-, defund-
