I am a new player and would need advice on a good build using PPC in any of its variations, because lightning is fun to use.

The best mechs for PPC's:
Blackjack and Grasshopper for 2HPPC + tons of heat sinks + a few JJ. GHR can bring some medium lasers too.
Catapult K2 for 4ERPPC
VGL-1 for 3c-ERPPC
Summoner for 2c-ERPPC
Warhawk prime for 4c-ERPPC

PPC and LPPC I recommend only as extra oomph on mechs that primarily carry AC5 or AC10. The clan ERPPC mechs can usually afford to bring a smallish targeting computer too.

Gonna add the Warhammer IIC with 4 C-ER PPCs. Works similar to the Warhawk, but protects it's weapons a bit better trading for the mobility of ar mounted weaponry.

actual advice and unpopular opinion if you actually want good combat effective builds: There's no such thing as good PPC builds.

You can always build something more effective at any weight category. You can build things for goofing around that will kind of work, but you will always be less combat effective then doing something else.

If you REALLY want to play poptart PPC Mediums, take twin regular PPCs in MOST situations. ERPPCs and Heavies are not worth the weight and heat in the Medium class. You want to boat DHS so you can sustain fire. All those poptarts at 700m away using ERPPCs are always hurting their team. They run too hot to sustain fire, and they can't hit things properly at that range, and they are out of position.
You are fast enough to not have to worry about getting underrun, so regular PPCs are good enough.
The only exception to the rule? This

The best poptarting PPC Medium. So many people run BJs, Uziels because they don't understand one important concept in MWO, Weapon Convergence. Once you know how important that is MWO, you will understand why this is the best mech/build for doing this. Not to mention the SHD has one of the best hitboxes in the entire game.

You only start to get decent builds from Heavy and up as you can pair them with cold running ballistics. And even then, you barely get any that outperform doing other builds.
This is one of the FEW PPC build I find combat effective, but only because
1. You have tonnage to bring another 2 Ballistics
2. You have ECM
3. You have JJs to poptart
4. Good Weapon convergence on the ERPPCs
https://mech.nav-alp...#2e0d78ee_NTG-H
So the play is basically, poptart 50 Dmg, cooldown, poptart 50 Dmg, cooldown, repeat. In a sustain fight, only fire the LBXs

The Awesome 8Q is fun with 3 HPPCs to punch big holes in enemy armour, but the mech itself is a barn door.

The 6xERPPC Direstar is actually a decent PPC build to run chain-fire only, no seriously. I run it regularly and it is hell lot of fun, you have enough heatsinks to chainfire all 6 PPCs without shutting down, and with the proper cadence, you can keep on firing them. And you get a last F You button before you die by firing everything at once.

And that's about it. These are just fun decent builds. The era of the PPC ended when PGI linked them with Gauss Rifles for Ghost Heat.

Absolutely false. The clan ERPPC mechs are a staple of competitive leagues, essential for mid-to long range Faction Play dropdecks and the best ones such as the VGL and WHK even have the capability to farm outrageous damage numbers in Quick Play racetracks. Note that mechs lacking heat sinks for sustained damage output such as the unreasonably popular 2ERPPC Shadow Cat are NOT in this list.

IS ER and Heavy PPC mechs instead are valid if and only if they are mounted on a mech that has absolutely outrageously good quirks for them, such as the BJ, the GHR and the CPLT. Those occasionally see use in FP and Competitive too, but less often than the clan ERPPC does, since their role is more narrow.

All PPCs require good aim to be effective though, which means you don't see them perform up to their potential quite that often, especially with how many players seem to ruin their chances at aiming with ridiculously high mouse sensitivities and stuff like that.

Clan erppc also have 5 points splash damage on top of the 10 pinpoint damage.
