[FIX] Game crash in Intel 10th & 11th Gen CPU's.

Some players using Intel 10th and 11th Gen CPU's have been running into issues with the game crashing upon launch.

This issue is related to a bug in OpenSSL 1.2. Any game that currently uses this version will have issues, this includes Unreal Engine 4.21 which is what Post Scriptum runs on.

Until we have a permanent fix, we have a workaround that should let the users affected play the game. You can find it below.

Step 1. Open "Control Panel" by searching for it in Windows search bar, by pressing the Windows button or key.
Step 2. Go to "System & Security"
Step 3. Go to "System"
Step 3. Press "Advanced system settings"
Step 4. Press "Environmental Variables"
Step 5. Create a new "System Variable" (NOT USER VARIABLE)
Step 6. Enter the following into the Variable name box: OPENSSL_ia32cap
Step 7. Enter the following into the Variable value box: ~0x20000000
Step 8. Now press OK.

Please try starting Post Scriptum again, you may need to restart your system for the changes to take effect.

I`ve tried both solutions (the bat-file and the system variable) this on my 11980HK notebook, but it doesn`t work to the full extent.
Now it crashes after i have entered the password. 4-5 seconds i see a blank screen with the MWO cursor and after that it goes back to windows.

The reason this fix works I think is because of the following from Intel's Website...

OpenSSL* 1.0.2 beta (Jun 2014) to OpenSSL 1.0.2k (Jan 2017) contain bugs that either cause a crash or bad SHA (Secure Hash Algorithm) values on processors with the SHA extensions, such as the recently released 10th Generation processor. Both bugs were fixed years ago; however, any application that uses the old version directly, or as one of its dependencies, will fail. Unreal Engine* version 4.13 (Sept 2016) to version 4.21 (Dec 2018) contains the old version of OpenSSL, so any game built using those versions is possibly affected.

Yeah it was certainly scary to have MWO not launch after upgrading to my new CPU. I went the batch file route
as I'm not a fan of changing OpenSSL behavior globally on my PC.

I had this issue with my new laptop (Core i7 11th gen) and used the fix mentioned in this thread to get my game running again. This is the first time I've ever even heard of OpenSSL and I can't really grasp what it is due to my limited technical knowledge.

My question is, is it possible for me to update the OpenSSL version on my laptop (Windows 11) so that this issue is fixed permanently? Or is it more complicated than that?

Hoping someone knows the answer to this.

Sadly, you can't do anything on your side (except applying the workaround)

OpenSSL is a free library to encrypt data. It's used (at least) during login in MWO.
PGI needs to replace the OpenSSL library with the fixed one. And recompile (ie rebuild) the module using that library.

To be honest - OpenSSL is a "backbone" of the HTTPS, SSH, SCP, SFTP and so on, in terms of protocols.
Hell, there was even a dangerous flaw, known as Heartbleed or smth like that in the past.
