Recently thinking how most comp scenes in other games are 5 v 5.

When this game developed its first serious comp scene, it was 8 v 8 every round.

Wondering what drove this.

When MWO's first comp scene formed there was no private lobby system, so matches consisted of two teams that were scheduled to play each other using the public matchmaker by sync droping until they had successfully managed to face off against each other in each of the required drops in their match. At the time the only game mode in MWO was 8v8 quickplay, so the league format was by default 8v8. Once the private lobby system was released I am assuming that the leagues just kept their 8v8 format for continuity.

The more recent player run comp leagues for MWO have been 5v5 and 6v6 as it is considered difficult to field a larger team due to the the games reduced player population, with the only 8v8 league in 2020 being the player run and PGI promoted world championship event, for which PGI adapted the game clients comp queue game mode to be used for the initial qualifier round.
