From the makers of the WWI Great War Series this time about WWII and the myth of the modern war and what horsepower really meant:

"Many think of World War Two as this modern, mechanised, fast-paced, mobile blitzkrieg war. But despite the flashy propaganda-films of soldier-filled trucks and tanks charging through big open fields in Eastern Europe, the German and Soviet War-effort heavily relied on horses. In fact, hundreds of thousands of horses were deployed in the German army on the forefront of Operation Barbarossa. Over 2,5 million horses would 'serve' in the German army in the entity of World War Two."

"We take a look at the types and amounts of tanks available to the German and Soviet armies on the eve before Barbarossa."

The drugs the Germans have ingested to make such decisions and believe in success must be very strong and in fact WWII is a war run on drugs:

i know some people say america, as we know it, was built on amphetamines. former soldiers in the post war era were using them tin bennys to work 2 or 3 shifts at the factories. they were of course all told that they had no side effects. well technically they dont, most of the side effects are from sleep deprivation, exhaustion, and general wear and tear amplified by the fact that you might sleep a couple times a week. the fact that so many boomers (the real ones, not the xers that zoomers call boomers) doped up to improve their performance on the job site so they could buy their muscle cars and ginormous houses and afford the green fees at the golf course. the whole war on drugs was a grand hypocrisy.

Horses, mules, and other animals are used in various military applications, even today. Just because it has wheels does not mean that a horse can't do better. It all depends up the terrain.
