According to Sarna, some mechs were equipped with them.
Could they be a thing in MWO?

Chaff grenades, incendary grendes would be nice too have. One messes with sensors and targeting, the other increases heat and causes a bit of damage. Maybe smoke to obscure certain places of fields of view.
Although we need a programmer to do all this really.

A role mechs fill trough specialty ammo in SRM or LRM launchers.
Not really applicable to MWO

I could see there being a use case for them, but mostly if they were deadfire indirect weapons. Getting that working sounds involved, unfortunately.

I always wanted a consumable that laid in an artillery smoke that didn't do any damage, but created a large cloud of smoke, the kind on some maps that is also impenetrable to night and infrared views.

Man.
Y'know what'd be even nicer than 'Mech mortars or vehicular grenade launchers?
Specialty SRM and LRM ammo. Not just Inferno surms or Thunder lurms, either. There's a lot of interesting alternative ammunition types that could be employed, stuff that would make NARC launchers more useful and perhaps offer a point to singleton small launchers like SRM-2s or LRM-5s.
Can you imagine the utter havoc a Nemesis-equipped NARC unit could deliver to the battlefield? Man, that's how you discourage LRMs - by giving some units the chance to steal your LRMs and redirect them to enemies, instead.

that was a feature that got axed somewhere around the clan invasion, because they don't know how to code their own game. you could still probibly represent ammo types as weapon variants.
