I get it's rare- but once you end up in matchmaking lockstep with one, you're either stuck, or hoping to die early and get out of lockstep... and risk sitting in queue for them to reappear anyhow.
The moral of the post, made shortly after about 5 from 6 matches with the one same group, is the tier 1 pool isn't big enough to escape lockstep with a any group outside of NA/euro peak times. I stand by that.

I actually enjoy playing against better players, particularly if I get to play against them over and over again.
The people who get upset by that probably didn't really play fighting games. The "culture" in fighting games usually means you'll re-match the same opponents several times in a row if you have the chance, especially if you keep getting beat, because each time you fight them again you're learning and improving.
In MWO, if I have the chance to play against better players, I love it! I don't care if I get dunked on and lose 10 times in a row, I'm learning from my mistakes and I derive a lot of joy through that. You gotta set aside your ego for a moment and learn to laugh at your own dumb moves.
Sometimes we make dumb moves as a habit and don't even realize it's dumb if we usually play against enemies that don't punish those stupid mistakes. That's why I find it enjoyable to play against better players.

People who say Tier 1 is the same game don't remember T4 and T5, or weren't inactive long enough to drop to the bottom.
I got the Ace of Spades (8 kills) achievement after playing this game on/off for about 6 years at the time. It was like, my 2nd match back playing in T5.

Yeah, when I came back after a 3 year break, even as rusty as I was, it was too easy in Tier 5. I was pushing a 3+ W/L at the beginning, and to be honest I was playing pretty badly. I basically just walked to the middle of the map, used no brain, didn't pay any attention to where enemies or friends where, found a corner, and just peeked that corner like 10 million times whilst shooting as much as heat allowed, and got to 3+ W/L.
Now, after 7 months of playing since coming back, I play better/smarter now but at a much lower W/L in T1.

Because i went to tier 2 at one point and it was horrific.. I stopped playing till the PSR exp bar changed a few years later..
That experience wasn't analogous because back then the Tiers were just an XP bar. Back then you could ride to Tier 1 with a sub1.0 W/L. So the Tiers really mostly separated players based on how many games they'd played, not on their performance.
