Anime: "Mobile Suit Gundam" (The original Series) and also "Gundam: Seed"
One of the coolest Gundam off-stories is "Gundam 08th MS Team."
"Code Geass" has some cool mecha they call "Nightmare frames."
"Evangelion"
(I haven't watched it, but many say Gundam Unicorn is good.)
"Big O" is getting dated, but is a great classic.

This is an easy one.

Megas XLR is what happens when you equip an Atlas with triple strength myomer, MASC, improved jumpjets, 400 engine, and every weapon in the Battletech universe stored away in Hammerspace.

I would suggest for real robot animes the following and why

armored troopers votoms: votoms is like battletech but with mini mecha. all the mecha are hard science based and focus heavily of realism . plus the story is as gritty and dark as the battletech novels

madox-01: though more battle armor like than mechs it's still a fun anime to watch

SPT layzner: a alternate history story if the cold war never end with some twist and such

Mospeada: one of 3 animes used to make robotech. the original story is pretty good as well
