When you see people talk about IS lights, the (non-hero) ones that usually come up are the Firestarter, Flea, and Jenner. I understand the latter two, with the size and speed and all, but what exactly makes the Firestarter so much better than, say, the Wolfhound or any of the other bigger lights?

The Firestarter can boat the most energy weapons of all IS light mechs. Btw, the Jenner has mostly fallen out of grace, despite his good mobility, because it's a walking CT.

Even though it has the most energy hardpoints other IS lights can get to similar alpha damage. Is sheer number of lasers really it's big advantage?

Compared with the Wolfhound, the Firestarter has a little bit worse frontal profile, survival quirks, and hardpoint locations, but has JJs and a lot more build variety. Having a lot of energy hardpoints opens up some nice build options that other lights don't have:

8SPL is relatively easy to use (all hitscan, all same cooldown and range) and can do a lot of damage quickly with decent heat efficiency.

MPLs and ERSLs give a powerful alpha strike with a very short laser duration.

LPPCs and SLs give some ranged harassing ability while still having a lot of heat efficient damage output at short range.

SNPPCs and SLs are effectively a more extreme, more short-range focused version of the above.

The Hero mechs aren't as strong as they used to be, but they're still decent IS MG mechs and they don't really ever have problems with overheating.

None of these builds are lightyears beyond other light mechs in terms of alpha strike potential or burst DPS or anything, but all of these builds combine good damage output with either good heat efficiency (can deal damage for longer) or good damage application (short laser burns, PPFLD) or both.

Just do yourself a favor and do NOT use the stock loadouts of these guys. Flamers don't do much damage! Limit to 1, maybe 2!

Firestarter is just a well rounded 35t mech about engine, hardpoints by components, quircks and jump-jets.

But its typical humanoid mech with low hardpoints, so it can't poke from mid distance so well as Raven-2X does
