No, not clans (well, maybe some clans...)

But in essence the final mission to MW4:M -- New Canton where you 'assume' control of a base. Just expanded upon using the randomly generated mission aspect of MW5:M.

Either through story mission with a number of factions (great houses or independents), or through mercenary reputation score you are contracted out to protect a single system. This will be your homebase of sorts where you can hot-store mechs that won't have their weapons or upgrades stripped. They'll have 50% upkeep while at base, ontop of your overall monthly cost being partially paid by whoever is contracting you out.

How this can function alongside the normal month-to-month flying around the known sphere is simply leaving a home garrison of sorts -- either unique NPCs that can act as the PC for "home defence" missions, or just your standard lancemates you hire from across the sphere. Either way you'll need at least 4 if you want a lance guarding your base.

To streamline the process and cutdown on needless mission bloat these missions would typically only happen when another mercenary outfit moves into your space. Although there can also be an option to allow for standard missions that pop-up within the sector itself to be done by your home garrison -- if you have another leopard that is.

This can also act as a money sink of sorts as well with unique and fun effects. An Armory so you can tune your weapons -- more energy damage for less range, more energy range for less damage.. increased ROF for increased heat on energy weapons, increased ROF for inceased heat and larger spread for burst fire ballistics... essentially another way to tweak things on your mech loadout.

Moving on -- other such money sinks in the base would be upgrading the various turrets around your base for additional defensive measures, short range radar so you got info link for everything within 1500m during base defense missions, long range for 100% scouting information in your system so you have a better idea of mission difficulties that turn up in your system (completely random as opposed to rival merc invasions which would be according to their rank and loadout). A cantina for your homebase, maybe a blackmarket if you joined pirate faction (Jake Kalmar of all people ;) ).

An option to buy a third Leopard so you can have two with you travelling around the system so you can drop in a second lance as backup if things get dicey on a mission. $10 million a pop? $20 million? $200 mill?

Have unique schematics for base buildings be tied to certain mercenary factions like Wolfs Dragoons or Snords, or other Lostech hunters that could allow for something like adding Ferros Fibros to your mech... but only downside would be 50% increase to repair time.

No passive income (they're already paying you!), but a passive increase to your faction relation around +1/+2 a month.

6 locations for your homebase, one for each great house you can find employment with, and another two for periphery realms and pirate factions. Although you'll be restricted to only one so choose wisely! So 8 additional unique maps to be made focusing on garrison duty, but not as painful as the randomly generated missions as its your home turf and all so something like the final mission to x marks the spot would be a great start.

A sneaky way to introduce clans and clantech without introducing clans or the clan invasion is to periodically have your base or missions in areas traditionally scouted by the clan -- which would be limited to two choices (periphery bordering steiner/rasalhague or rasalhague) have missions where you end up facing them.

Lots of more stuff as well -- purchasing a few igors or demolishers for home defence would be beautiful. Maybe a military attache/liason/whatever/training facility(?) to help "promote" your lieutenant lancemates into captains and captains into majors; more unique non-ranked NPC lancemates would fit the bill perfectly.

>_>
