Why does it display (LGD) on legendary mechs in the teams overview when the game starts, but doesn't do the same for (H)ero or (C)hampion? But there is a (S)pecial?

I wish it didn't display any of those. If the other players don't know what mech it is, there's no reason to shove it in their face. What purpose does the label serve?

Heroes have their own designation, champions have (C), loyalty rewards have (L) and platinum has (P).

The purpose is a bit of wallet waving and advertisement for PGI. TBH I'm surprised that heroes don't have a (H) afterwards, they're really the only non basic 'mechs that don't have the 'look at me I'm special!'.

On the other hand though, for a very long time piloting a hero 'mech was ostracized by the community. Either they were, as a whole, OP or UP depending on the time frame, and no one liked hero pilots because of it. Was a great way to either get focused by the other team or people willing to take the penalty and team shoot you.

That's kinda what I'm thinking, it might attract negative attention unnecessarily. Don't see what good purpose it serves other than like you say to promote it for the developer.

One of my favorite builds (FNR-WR) is LRM60 + MPL3 + AMS + ECM. I understand some people may not like that playstyle and normally I play a MDD-RV with a similar loadout (if I'm LRM) so I'm not sitting in an assault doing it. Anyway, I sure don't want it to say FNR-WR (LRM) (HERO) (ASSAULT). It's enough for people to know if they know from FNR-WR. Exaggerated example but yeah...

i noticed that in your profile page it counts them as specials and not heros. you wont find them if you turned on the hero filter but you will if you turned on special. i think its more or less the same in mech select.

heros have alternate names for display, rather than the usual variant designations. pgi has been pretty inconsistent about that though. the snowball/fireball specials they did for the holiday event look like heroes but are in fact (s) mechs, and legends for all intents and purposes also seem to be specials. how they are named seems to be independent from the actual bonus given, and the s and h bonuses are effectively the same. ive had to do horrid things in my spreadsheets to get things to sort correctly.

You sound very very salty.. Hero mechs are just like any other mechs. I don't see why customers cannot help the devs..

There is some MWO talk about updating the Champion mech bonuses to make it more relevant...

For example, if MWO makes Champion mech +20% CBills bonus, and +20% XP bonus, then I would be very happy to go and buy Champion mechs!

If you haven't already noticed, Champion mechs are frequently associated with the more popular variants!
eg: I wants my BAS-A(C), LBK-H(C)==>so much so that it encroaches onto LBK-H(L) territory!

KDK-3(C) would be the poor man's version of KDK-3(P).

Well the need for a (C) came first with Champion mechs to distinguish them from their basic counterparts. That is probably how they are referenced in the code. Actually, Founders mechs would have been the first use of a letter but I think the (F) convention didn't start right off the bat. Heroes always had unique hardpoints and were a unique variant already. But their naming in the game was woefully inconsistent. Many times, they had the Hero name as the mech name in game and you wouldn't know what chassis they were. E.G. "Gridiron" instead of "HBK-GI." Some of that got fixed later. The other letters were added to differentiate, again, between standard variants and their boosted counterparts. They originally shared the same skill tree, when that was on a per-variant basis.

As for LGD? Name recognition--marketing. A way to call them out as special. Nothing really wrong with that.

I'm not salty, it's how it was. Hero pilots got a lot of flak (justified or not) for using those 'mechs. Their different hardpoints was a point of contention for a long while, especially the ones that were made up just for this game and have no basis in lore.

TBH I'm glad that people aren't getting team shot or focused for the crime of throwing PGI some money with the heroes anymore. I like some of the paintjobs, and almost all of the hardpoints are interesting (not better or worse, just interesting). I like the special tags on the mechs, makes me look to see what that cool looking or so gaudy it's amazing paint scheme that the community runs.

idk about that. maybe gold dires, but most of the heroes have been the trashier of the variants except in a few select cases. and hero mechs aren't the premium option they used to be. if you play events and chase sales its not hard to have a large number of freely obtained hero mechs. i own a lot of heroes, i run a lot of heroes, i havent seen much in the way of poor treatment on the grounds of running a hero mech. you might get focused if you are in an ultraviolet or a deathstrike, or other notable heroes (and some of the legendries are pretty dangerous too), more because you are a prime threat.

Sometimes it's nice to have classics. I really enjoy it. I think of it like a classic car. When I use that machine, I feel that way.

So, you think people are going to grief you over a $15 mech in a 10 year old game in which some people have EVERY mech in the entire game? Seems completely logical.

How many years ago was this? Ive heard about the Golden Mech times of people even team killing over them but never about hero mechs having the same issue. Certainly not in the last 2 years Ive been playing. People cry about anything and everything being broken but every match has at least a lance of hero mechs scattered on either or both teams.

Gold mechs are the only ones I ever recall, we'd occasionally throw some shots at the guys in our unit to poke a little extra fun at them for whaling it up.

Recently the majority of my drops are in the Deathwish, which while it's maybe not the best HBK, for me it's the best of the clan ones - or at least the most fun.
