A lot of mechs that seem to be good on paper cannot handle even a moderate beating because of horribly low Side Torso armor. This is the most problematic for some assault mechs, because they are much larger than any other weight class, and their side torsos are magnets for bullets.

So i suggest this new feature: Modular Armor Plates.

Each plate gives 20-25 additional armor to the component it got installed on. Like ammo bins, it comes in two variants: full-weight and half-weight. Full-weight plate weights 2 tons and take 2 slots, and half-weight plate weights 1 ton, takes 1 crit slot and provide only half of armor bonus.

To make it less boatable and prevent an "armor boats", i suggest either making a hard limit of Armor Plates on a mech (i think gradually increasing per weight class: 1 plates for light mechs, 2 plates for medium mechs, 3 plates for heavy mechs and 4 plates for assault mechs), OR making it take a weapon hardpoint. This would make some mechs that have lots of weapon hardpoints but very weak armor able to trade these parameters between eachother, and that will certainly make some unpopular chassis much more playable.

I would agree, but per properties described in BattleTech (decreased Top Speed + inability to use Stealth when used with Stealth Armor).
