Sometime in the future, well after launch, I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a annual paid-entry Solaris Tournament with some kind of actual prize for the winner(s) such as merchandise and massive bragging rights. I would suggest a portion of procedes go to a charity of some sort.

This would be SEPERATE from the typical Solaris competitions that are available for all (paying or non-paying players) to play in, tournaments that would most likely have a simple c-bill fee to enter.

Any thoughts? I don't have time to expand on details, other than that "hotdog funds" do not count as charity...

Sure. Why not? I don't expect to win, but if I did... You'd all have to hear about it and live in shame. :P

I like the way you think.
PGI could make a tidy profit as well as get the game and their company some publicity - they'd need a solid and potentially expensive setup for all of this, but it's probably well worth the investment.

I, for one, would participate, if such a thing were implemented.

The charity aspect is nice, a double elimination tourney would be easy to setup (and once you have the format it's good for future tourneys as well) and you could run it in a few hours.

Rather than cash, I'd do prizes (Dev artwork, game mockups, signed stuff) the cheaters would be less interested, and actually you'd probably get more player interest.

How about if you win they let you pick the next Mech to be added in game (from a list of choices of course).

:P

Roll these on a semi monthly basis and raise/lower the registration levels based on player base/interest, and it would be quite fun.

Not to rain on your parade, but I suspect that there are legal ramifications {and potential liabilities} that should be considered before endeavoring upon such an adventure.

It's a nice touch, but .... I'd think it would have to be a side bet at best, and I'd be surprised if THE GODS didn't quash it.

Yeah, I agree that the prize should not be cash.

There's a few things to deal with, you're right Hellen. How would an entry fee be made purchaseable? It could be sold in the in-game store in a way that you could buy XP buffs or custom whatnots. The prize, if of a significant value, might be a form of taxable income and could have to be dealt with accordingly. And should it be a pure charity competition? I think so because it'd get more people involved with MWO and that's better than charging an entre fee and having them pocket the cash directly. If PGI simply made it a charity competition, with an artistic prize, then it'd be well-received by the entire Inner Sphere and would generate nothing but goodness and rivers of cream and honey.

You open up something like that and before you know it, there will be hundreds, if not thousands of people going over to pay real hard cash just so they can upgrade their 'mechs for the Solaris matches and still being able to use them outside, in the normal campaigns. Takes the fun out of playing the game when those who are unable to pay cannot compete in any part of the game with those that do (I have seen it far too many times on other so called free-to-play games and it would completely ruin BattleTech/MechWarrior for me to see it go that way. I would rather a game disc be released in the way of the previous MechWarrior games - one-time fee for the game only.)
So unless there is a special server that caters solely for pay players and a server for those that cannot or paying for such upgrades to your 'mech (and indeed your account) that is restricted solely to such a Solaris event (in which case I do not see why people would pay real money for a limited time event) - my vote is a definite NO.

I counter: The Paid-entry Solaris Tournament requires participants to use a loaner Mech, provided by the Tournament's sponsors. That way nobody can have an unfair advantage; the only thing you can bring with you are your Pilot Skills and Chassis Skills, but not your own Mech. Modules... I dunno, that'd be determined by the officials.

I like the general idea and second Prosperity Park's comment. A charity only event should give MWO some nice publicity. Tickets for this event could be bought via the in-game store.

I wouldn't make it a monthly event as someone else has suggested. That's what the normal Solaris circus is for. As for the size of the combats and the modus operandi of the tournament... don't know. It might even make sense to run lance vs lance and mechwarrior vs mechwarrior tournaments simultaneously... this way more people get involved and the event might be appealing to a wider audience.

there is only one charity worth donating to
the PGI Pizza Fund

all profits not given back to plays/tourney winners should go directly to PGI
we after all want this game to grow and succeed
if i wanted to give my $ to a charity i would
but i dont
id much rather give it to PGI

ability for community's to host real tournaments would lead to a nice healthy PRO scene
this would generate alot of future for MW, look at how well the Pro scenes of Starcraft and League of legends is doing (and many other games)
so why not MWO , i like it

Absolutely we need some sort of Solaris VII tournament. All the more better if you can have replays or spectators.

South-Korean style tournament. Televised. Advertisers would foot the cost plus prize that goes to charity. Winner gets nothing but an in-game emblem or custom paintjob for a mech or something. Mech Night 2012. The Science channel would probably be happy to host it.

I have to agree. This is something that would likely fall victim to our overly litigious society. :P

This would be cool.

Perhaps events set-up in "colosseums" with people watching matches played on big screen plasmas. :D

Maybe semi annual event. Half of the entry fees would go to suport MWO, the other half would go to winners choice of charity. Winner would get plaque, T-shirt, artwork, and bragging rights. Maybe name in Valhalla room for life!!

I'm totally in for that. Maybe somewhere further down the track, but still - as a community, we've gotta do this.

Another thing I'd really like to see is weekly or monthly tournaments in major cities. For example, League of Legends has quite a few tournies - though many are based in Europe. I hope that MWO will be more North America based, with plenty of action for us Aussies too.

I like it. Charity even involving 'Mech combat..why didn't I think of that? And Prosperity hit on a great way to keep the playing field even, not bringing your own 'Mech but having to use what's available. Not sure about monthly, but 1 or 2 a year would definitely get me interested.
