'Bout 9 months to a year for a five or six digit number of gamers to play consistently. After that expect a much smaller number (three to four) to play it every day for the next 60 years.

....you know who you are.

MWO will last As long as the devs are willing to continue working on it.

MW series playerbase (young + old!) has already been regenerating over years, with these 3 conditions MWO will be able to last for long:
1) Good development (I hope so :D);
2) Optimized ruleset;
3) Supported product.

What else to be added...

Though I agree with this in concept, what little PGI has revealed about the game has shown, IMO, a good balance of basing the gaming off of TT, but still allowing a wide variance as to how it is implemented. In short, they are using the rules as a basis, but not as de facto law.

Tell me something I do not know. :angry: I read somewhere, a dev blog or something, that randomness of a shot comes into play. Someone help me and post a link to this. Sure I and my team may hit 3 out of 5 times at what we aim at, and a lesser team gets that random lucky shot that turns the tide. Somehwere I bet a BT/TT purist posted a suggestion on having this, with just single player experience, and very limited online play, and here you go. My opinion, not a great thing in online competative play.

Will MWO last for 10 year? In my opinion probably not, but it will depend on a couple of factors. Whether the Developers can keep the game fresh with new content or tournaments (if tournaments are even on the table). And if the community keeps in going my being active.

The main reason why a game like Starcraft has been running for so long is by the amount of Korean players there are still playing the game. Its there main sport. And I think tournaments are still being played in Korea even now that Starcraft 2 is out.

Unfortunately, Mechwarrior doesn't have the same numbers as Starcraft does so we may see 5 years out of the game.

I am really looking forward to the release, I don't care if it's free to play or a pay system model (as long as it doesn't go more than the standard $15/month MMO subscription rate). Gameplay will dictate longevity, accessibility will dictate numbers of players. World of Warcraft saw it's greatest amounts of players with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, but it also harkened the greatest nerfing to the game to date. I'm looking forward to the simulator aspect of this game, there's just not enough science fiction simulators out... well, none at the moment are there? Point being, this game will last not only as long as the developer supports it, but as long as the gamers support it.
