Makes sense to me, but maybe just make it so you can accrue but can't allot your pilot XP until you actually purchase that variant? Also perhaps make it so you don't earn GXP in trials.

I think you should get both forms of exp. But, it should be a lesser value. For example 1/4th normal experience in GXP and EXP.

Perhaps they don't want people to accrue XP that they cannot spend, since it would not be wise to let people spend XP on the trial mechs (since they rotate often, a player would then permanently 'lose' any xp spent)

I think the trials would be more satisfying if they could keep the XP, though, even if the pilot lab remained locked; Then if they buy the same variant again as a real purchase, they have the XP they earned waiting for them! They should also be able to keep the small fraction of GXP earned.
