Maybe they are self propelled like 40k bolt slugs? that would allow toros mountings (that have virtually no barrel length) and explain how they can sustain a low speed without falling to the ground as soon as they come out of the barrel

also Paul, about your sig "I also used to be a freelance Mechwarrior until I took an Arrow IV to the Lower Leg Actuator."

BT fans came up with that a mere hour after the origonal joke

"The Autocannon is a direct-fire ballistic weapon, firing HEAP (High-Explosive Armor-Piercing) rounds at targets either singly or in bursts."

They aren't self-propelled like a Boltgun round, they're just really big cannons.

well, this is a bad comparison, b/c an AC20 has nowhere near the barrel length of modern tank gun, and doesn't fire sub caliber munitions encased in a sabot.. so the projectile velocity is going to be much slower than 1660m/s

You missed my second reply where I said that ;)

"Different manufacturers and models of autocannons have different calibers (25mm-203mm) and rates of fire. Due to this, autocannons are grouped into generic "classes" of autocannons with common damage ratings, with Autocannon/20s doing massive damage while having very short range.

An example of the rating system: the Crusher Super Heavy Cannon is a 150mm weapon firing ten shells per "round" while the Chemjet Gun is a 185mm weapon firing much slower (possibly 1 shell), and causing higher damage per shell. Despite their differences, both are classified as Autocannon/20s due to their damage output."

Eh, for all the fluff cares you could have an AC/2 firing 500mm calibre shots.

As for the speed of AC/20 projectiles?
"Pretty high" should be a good description.
They got a range of about 108km, with a maximum flight time of 60 seconds for that range.
Go do the math.
Although if we assume that the shells themselves are technically the same as those of an AC/2, we'd be looking at much higher speeds (360km in a minute time).
