You do know that they are trying to follow the lore of a 30-year old board game called Battletech, right?
This means that they didn't design the Cicada on their own, it's been around for 25-odd years or so.

But how about this: Buy a Cicada, switch to a 100 standard engine, put in four AC/2s and a ton of ammo.

There, more weapons and less speed. Not any more armour, but two out of three isn't bad, right?

Im not sure how ppl don't understand that the total weight effects the amount of armor and eng size. If you want a "better" medium mech get a Hunchback or a Centurion, later the Trebuchet. All tree are 50 tons and will be more armored and slower and able to carry more weapons...

It'll be a better mech when collision knock downs are added back in so it can tackle annoying biting Fleas (and Commandos and mutual knock down with Jenners).

I don't think any Cicada variant in the game has missile slots.

You know it's funny, but as a Jenner pilot I HATE running into Cicada for the exact points the O/P is complaining about. it's faster than I am [ok. . about the same after mods] better armored, and (slightly) better armed. the only thing I hate worse is running into another decent Jenner pilot.

You can try to make the mech fit the role, or you can fit into the role it was designed for. Try the latter, you might have better luck (and a little more fun)

Cicada is a fast recon mech. You should treat her as light, not as medium. It's only 5 tons heavier than Jenner. How much more weaponry and armor you want for 5 tons? Well, later in the timeline Cicada will recieve some upgrades to her engine, armor and weaponry. Now it's just Jenner's bigger sis, as it should be.

The available medium 'mechs ARE good.

Before the second to last beta reset I had 3 Hunchbacks and a Centurion AL. I also tried the Cicada with the ballistics slot on the last beta reset. (AC10 on a 40t mech, good fun)
Remember Mediums are just that, they sacrifice over all fire power and armour for manoeuvrability. Really if all you want is more armour, weapons and less speed, then you should probably get a heavy, not a medium. Go look at the hard point load out on the dragon and downgrade the giant engine, you might be happier in that than in a hunchback.

There is an easy way to get what you want out of a medium though, is the 'mech lab. Go get a medium with the hard points you want, downgrade the engine, mount the weapons you want and upgrade the armour and ammo.

To be honest I love the mediums 'mechs and prefer them to my atlas.

Seeing as the timeline doesn't allow for me to get my Bushwhacker or Hollander, I'm going to stick with my hunchbacks and centurions. Might ever rebuy my cicada after I get my 9x energy hard point hunchback up and running again.

EDIT: I just don't like the idea of using a raven as a hollander, but yeah I know I could.

Depends what your after, the Cicada is a mech designed to be fast, just like the Hunchie or the Centurion, you have to buy the mech based on how you want to use it.. ..if you want to run around at 130k, your not going to get a hunchie... ..the cicada is a great 'heavy scout' and perfect for protecting your teammats from lights, while it might not pack as much of a punch, it can harass them enough to save your team mates, even better for being a quick response to LRM boats, are they going to keep firing LRMS while a cicada which just broke through the lines harasses them??

I'm quite fond of my 2A. Previous to it being in game, I ran mostly Jenner because I like the fast stick-and-move type play. The 2A gives me the same ability with more armor.

Current and favorite loadout:
XL340
4 MLas
AMS + 1 ton ammo
Endo Steel
Ferro Fibrous
Double Heatsinks
I tweaked armor a bit, but don't remember where and how much.

lololololol

The Cicada is a medium that is trying to be a light. It is the Mega-Jenner and I like it.

The Hunchback and Centurion are both mediums that are trying to be heavies.

What we really need is a medium that is just a medium.
