The idea of gravity came up in science class, so I was thinking if it were possible to modify the gravity of levels. Because Mechwarriors is a game that takes place on multiple planets, their masses should be different, thus affecting the gravity upon the planet.

Therefore, the graviy could have an affect on certain things such as bullet drop (if there is), jump jet capability, speed, missle travel path and time and other things. Technically speaking, if one were to go as far as to deploy a 100-ton Atlas on a 2G planet, it would lead to a 200-ton Atlas thus effectively causing an immense speed deterioration. Futhurmore, it could lead to easier falling or structural collapse for buildings.

I do hope something like this is in the game. Mechwarrior 2 had it and it really changed the way some maps could be played.

I would love to pilot a Jenner on "The Rock".

"Sigma 2, can you board that enemy McKenna?"
"Yes sir."

Yes please. The MW2 games did a great job of different environments with the silent space missions on light gravity icebergs and other space objects and the effect of ambient temperature (in space? load up on energy weapons!).

Variable gravity is certainly something I would like to see.I do think it will be a factor.

Agreed, a change in gravity would alter the course of any battle.

Variable gravity = good
Variable temperature = good
Variable atmospheric density = good (have it affect shot/missile speed and laser/PPC diffusion/diffraction and heat dissipation rates)

I would like to see physics impacts in low-G. You got hit by an AC/20 in low-G, you fly back a few feet.

The first two sound like they could be first gen additions to the game, but variable atmospheric density sounds more like a, oh..;7th 8th maybe? <_< It would definitely make macthes more interesting, but the average "hop on and game for twenty minutes then get off" kind of guy isn't going to want to have to change his mech for every battle or worry whether his lasers will be totally useless beyond fifty yards because he picked an asteroid map where he thought the lack of temperature would make them da bomb.

There will be limits to what can be done as far as variable gravity, at least on the heavier than normal side. As far as I know the Battletech Universe has never been advanced enough to develop any sort of artificial gravity compensation technology, which means that gravity heavy enough to incapacitate a human will still incapacitate a human even if they are inside a battlemech. The area where heavier than normal gravity is experienced most often is during dropship acceleration to reach a planet when inbound from a jumpship. High acceleration induced G forces are very taxing on crews but sometimes worth it in attempts to surprise garrisons with a fast approach. But heavy g activity would strain any activity planetside including combat.

Light g environments (And 0 g) are certainly possible as has been pointed out in previous threads has been included in previous Mechwarrior titles. It would be interesting to see them used again.

Crud...
I just thought of something.
WHO would live in 0G ENVIRONMENTS!!! Considering most mech battles are over Barracks/Cities/Mech Factories/ and ETC.
Why fight on some forgotten peice of creator? or some inhospitable planet you cant even stand on?

I'd love to fight in environments ranging from 0.3 - 1.3g

One scenario from the Mechwarrior 2 series (I forget which title) had you actually on the surface of a giant space iceberg, essentiall bringing a large chunk of Ice to help supply a scarce water outpost. (Talk about Ice Pirates). Also you could be a mobile defense unit on the surface of a dropship or jumpship or even for a space station.(Though attacking Jumpships and space stations would violate the Ares conventions, some barbarians still do it).

Well, not every planet has to be settled just for the sake of it. Maybe the planet, even though otherwise hostile, has amazing reservoirs of ressources otherwise scarce throughout the universe?
Or maybe it's just in an important strategic location if you look at the borders of the factions, so you'd have to put a garrison there just for military reasons. Or you intentionally choose a hostile planet for testing/training. Or you choose a backwater planeted to hide some important facilities just because nobody expects them.

But if you have planets, you never get 0G that's true. At the most, very low gravity. 0G really is for space stations and drop ships only. And drop ship battles are canonically very rare/impossible because everyone's afraid the drop ships get damaged and more important technology they can't reproduce is lost forever.

I like the ideas of alternating gravity, but as said there would really be no point in settling a planet that doesn't support human life.

That being said, I would LOVE (and I would say that it almost NEEDS to be included) is varying environments, extremely hot, extremely cold, extreme weather etc.

I would vote for this before alternating gravity.
