The community seems to be up in arms over the idea of a 3rd person "over the shoulder" view in MWO, but the devs have some very valid reasons to want to include it, namely (as covered in the podcast) the torso twist mechanic is what new users have the most trouble with, and a 3rd person view is the most intuitive and comprehensive way for them to get a handle on how it works.

Could including a moving, 3d representation of your mech as part of the HUD provide the same benefit while maintaining the 1st person perspective of sitting in your mech's cockpit? If the benefit PGI is after is a clear, intuitive way to show new users that, while their cockpit may be facing one way, their legs are going off in another direction entirely, this seems to have that covered.

I'd like it if my mech and my target's mech both appeared as rendered 3d objects as part of the HUD, with the different locations colored appropriately to represent the damage they've taken. This would also help to clarify exactly what part of a particular mech chassis counts as center torso, side torso and head, rather than the generic 2d doll that's currently used to display location damage for your mech and that of your target.

Perhaps make it an option, to let users select one or the other.
