It's also nice to be able to get over bumps and ridges that can't normally be climbed.
Currently you only need 1 jump jet, so it's only a 1ton and 1crit investment. Easily added for a nice boost to mobility.
Btw it'd say that catapults C1 and C4 can totally be fit for brawling. The A1 is an abomination though.

As much as I don't like playing against them, 6x streak A1s *are* one of the best brawlers in the game right now. They have a combination of consistent firepower, speed, mobility and durability that is hard to beat, with only one real weakness: they are fairly easily disarmed.
However, the one I'm *really* scared of is 4xstreak, 2x SRM6. I played that thing back in close beta and it was brutal.

XL on a brawler has it's place.
Not on a hunch G H J or P, and not on an Atlas.
Cataphract and Catapult however, have relatively small side torsos when viewed head on.
Try out any given mech first with a standard, if you find yourself loosing torsos on a frequent basis don't XL, however if you aren't then you might as well XL it.

My -2X almost always dies to CT damage anyways, so with an XL I get nearly 85 kph. The ability to engage and disengage increases my survivability more than the vulnerable side torso decreases it.

you need to play mw4 style with it
pop up shot your alpha drop back down
2 large lasers (in arms)
1 gauus (in arm as well so you dont have to manage to reticules)
2 med lasers (in torso for presky lights
Pop up put to large lasers and a gauss shot on someone... fall back down
rinse repeat until bad guys are hurting or dead
