The XP stays with that mech/variant even after you sell it but you cannot do anything with it while you do not own the mech. If you rebuy the mech it becomes accessible again.

If you unlock basic with a mech and then sell it, it DOES count for one of the variants that you've unlocked towards getting elite skills. So you can have two commandos, get basic on both, sell both, buy a third commando, get basic, and then unlock elite on it.

You can level Centurion A and unlock all basic efficiencies then sell it, when you buy and level Centurion B and C and unlock their basic efficiencies, the ones you got from A will still count and you will be able to open up elite efficiencies.
When you rebuy Centurion A, it will still have the efficiencies and XP that you left on it.

I'd rather run a few more matches for CBs than sell a mech for 15% of it's original value.

Finish elites before you sell a mech you don't like, if you plan on buying other variants of that chassis. If you plan on unlocking master anyways.
