I have a few ideas for catering to the RPG audience at the beginning without it taking up to many resources.

Let people make a pilot character. Then let those characters be able to hang out in a bar (or similar establishment) between fights were they can talk to other pilots, order food/drinks, possibly watch other fights (esport).

This can be expanded upon later as time and resources allows (letting characters who wears parade uniform show their medals, betting, Solaris and so on).

This way you could also start to sell different clothes and such to the characters.

... yeah... that would be super easy to implement!

okay.. less sarcasm... your suggestion would take a very large effort to implement and is not the direction the game is going. this is an online multiplayer game, not a MMO

Many MMO's have bars and socializing between characters because you play as your avatar in the actual game, so making a bar or social venue is the same as making a very small mission map. It doesn't require too many resources (read: Programmer-hours) to make a Social Bar when you already have a functional game engine that supports little avatars running around in open areas such as plazas, forests, and dungeons.

In the case of MechWariror: Online, they would have to create an entirely new game engine to run the social scene, and make an engine to create pilot avatars. It would take condsierable resources, and I would rather see that effort put toward making UrbanMech Victory Dance animations. :P

I suspect the closest you'll get to this is some sort of player run RP channel in game if custom channels can be created.

I would rather see an in-game bulletin board/messaging system. Something where people can send messages to other pilots, whether it be threats, challenges, or congratulations, from inside the game. Maybe implement a 'trophy case' for leaderboards for each stellar nation or in canon group, so players can compare themselves to others, but I'd hope they'd hold off on anything more intensive - actual character avatars can definitely be on the back burner for quite some time as far as I'm concerned.

I would love a bulletin board, but it would quickly fill up with hundreds of posts per day and it'd be hard to find the specific challenges/messages aimed at you...

Maybe each group (Merc Corp, Faction Unit) could have their own boards. That would be nice, and neatly organized.

Maybe they can make it 2D or sprite-like to the idea of a Crescent Revenge or Link/Legend of Zelda lay out with our avatars pictures running around. Heck make them tile-block like (the original Legend of Zelda)

But you can't see it when you have the MW:O software running... in theory.

Oh, and to this:

Lego MW:O? No? That'd be a better block-based modeling approach. More utilitatian, like Omniblocks.
Hehe... I don't see any low-end Avatar system being developed for this game. :P

What? Are you going to be posting in the MWO forum while playing MWO?

"Sgt Prosperity, the enemy is on us"
"Oh just wait a minute, I need to finish this post on the MWO forum."

You can, and some people undoubtedly will. However, not everyone who eventually joins the game will be logged into the forums, or might have a different username on the forum. An in-game mail or bulletin board would allow for everyone to communicate in game without having to deal with windowing the game, and would add at least some immersion to me.

I kinda meant what Ramien said...

... but I'm still going to finish this post before I send out LRMs, so just keep that lock and hold your horses.
