After much tomfoolery about Zoids in the Dolphinmech thread, I decided to make a dedicated Zoid thread for us to use. For example to reminisce on fond memories of giant robot animals, discuss how to build acurate megamek profiles for Command Wolves and Genosaurers, or perhaps show off the favorite model you built.

Anyway for those who don't know what Zoids are...

it is this.

not this.

Oh, nostalgia...

I played with the Americanized "Technozoids" line as a child, and eventually found out about the Zoids series (and revived model line) as a teen.

My personal favorites were the Heldigunner/"Demon Lizard", the Geno Saurer, the Geno Breaker, and the Berserk Führer/"Berserk Fury". :P

Never watched Zoids... I suppose you could say that they were "next gen" television for me. Here's an example of what I watched on TV when I was a kid:

I loved building the models, but the damn things were so expensive. You don't even seem to be able to get the TOMY ones anymore, except for outrageous prices from ebay, etc

Those are the 1999 "new line" zoids Strum Wealh is referring to

Posted Image

(that's from a $75 ebay listing, about double what you used to pay).

So sadly, I only ever got around to building two of my favorites, the Liger Zero and Blade Liger.

Here are my two guys:

I was thinking of getting a couple of the HMM models... but anyways, since I never found a company like AMT or Revell that made Battletech models, Zoid models were always great, and even a tiny bit challenging, making something that would actually walk when you turned it on (though heaven forbid I ever accidentally break one of the legs...).

The ligers were a no brainer, since I love big cats, but I always loved the Command Wolf as well, brilliant design, imo. Light (45 tons), very minimalist and utilitarian, yet highly fast and agile (250kph. Problem, Cicada? Posted Image) and capable of packing on whatever you want, increasingly at the expense of said agility.

Posted Image

If I start building the models again, that's what'd I'd go for.

Shows weren't bad either, as anime goes (not really a fan of much of it in general anymore). I think I actually have Chaotic Century's two seasons (CC/GF) on my hard drive somewhere. They were the only decent ones, and even then, really just Chaotic Century (Guardian Force wasn't nearly as good).

In general though, I just loved the designs. The only Japanese style mechs I'll ever likely care for, and yes, they're largely kids toys/shows, but you know what? If we can have a 200+ thread basically on how awesome Rainbow Dash is, then I can have my Liger Zero, damnit! :P

Predatory animals (and dinosaurs ) and mechs; what more could one ask for?

Also, nice image, Watchit

I wanna try one of those HMM models as well, and the way things are on ebay they might even be cheaper than the TOMY models :P

I got into the model building when they were pretty popular, before they were discontinued in the states so I have quite a few (but sadly never got around to getting a blade liger)

I'll post some pictures later when I have time.

OHMAHGAWDZOIDS. They're pretty much what made me like giant robots and the like in the first place. I used to have one of the Liger Zeros with *salesman voice* STRIKE LASER CLAW ACTION! */salesman voice* I believe a younger sibling uhm... got a hold of it. Now I'm sad.

But, I can fix that. Brb gonna go rewatch every episode ever.

I remember Zoids, in fact I have a number of episodes of the anime on DVD. Can't remember which one as there were a number of them. I also have a Zoid toy around here somewhere and its my favorite, the Guysak Scorpion and the Gun Sniper Raptor.

Well Watchit, I gotta say, you win this thread

From the sounds of it, the HMM models are more complex (and more poseable) than the TOMY/Hasbro motorized kits, which it looks like most of yours are (yes? no?), so I might get a couple of them... even of the Liger Zero is like $130... Oh well, yay for college grants! I'm sure the fed would be overjoyed to see I'm using all the personal money they free up to buy Zoid models

Also, couple of questions:

1.) Is that a Liger Zero X in that top image?

2.) JUST HOW BIG is that Ultrasaurus?!?! -_- (is that 1/72nd scale still?! Because in the show that thing was monstrous)

Wow Watchit... your collection is the only one I've seen rival mine... nice job.

But I must ask... WHY IS YOUR GENO BREAKER CONFIGURED AS A SAURER?

The Ultrasaurus, Death Stinger, Death Saurer, and Siesmosaur were all exaggerated in the shows, and depicted as being much larger than they really are.
