Maybe i'm old.

But i Definitely remember a Mechwarrior Online game done in the early 2000s with arena combat and an Over world where different Battletech factions fought across the Innerphere. Same Idea a F2p game where you purchased mechs and equipment with cash.

That game never made it out of beta. it got squashed maybe 2-3 months into open beta.

Now we have the same Game with updated graphics. F2p arena style combat.

How will the new MWO last longer / be better then the prior incarnation?

does the development team know they're arguably treading the same ground?

Now don't get me wrong I'm more then a little excited to return to piloting a Mech. But this has always nagged me when ever i've seen MWO news.

That was Multiplayer Battletech 3025.

The game was largely hobbled by the developers and rights owners (looking at you, EA and Microsoft).

I think the biggest advantage MWO has is the sheer amount of time that has passed since the last release of an MW game. The community has waited a long time for this, and I think things will pan out better this time.

Wow, the graphics on 3025 look a lot better than I remember them.

Ahh memories... I think you're thinking about the beta mpbt 3025 - The graphics were most sparse indeed.

MPBT 3025 the only mech game I have been in that you would hear ppl say over coms "HOLY S*** ITS A RAVEN!!!":o
I loved that game. Its proof that EA can screw up anything.

this game isn't arena combat. you're talking about mech warrior 5, which was announced late 2000s, so you're wrong.it was also not planned to be f2p. so you're wrong again.

Prehaps you are old, indeed there hasn't been a previous MWO or F2P MW title at all. Though there was MBT3025, that was subscription...or was intended to be.

It got EA trying to get tons of money out of Microsoft and Microsoft saying "screw that, I can just buy the rights to the entire IP for less" then when EA had to renew...the price had gone way up. EA basically got greedy and that cost them. From my understanding anyway.

There's about a billion threads, dev posts, and FAQ on this.

MW, MW2, MW3, MW4, MBT3025, MWO...yeah, pretty sure they know this isn't the first game with mechs over the internet.

In fact the second Mechassault was the first Battletech related game to launch with an online faction map. Though the implementation was terrible.
