What Can Mwo Learn From Tribes: Ascend? (New Player Experience)

As a new player, the learning curve for MWO can be a bit daunting. One game that handles this elegantly is Tribes:Ascend. In this video, I give two specific examples from of how the MWO devs can immediately and dramatically improve the tutorial experience for players of all skill levels, especially those new to the game.

Some realy good Ideas, the one I like the most were roam the map. In a mutiplayer game that lets you, I will load into the maps alone i will spend 10- 15 min exploring it by meyself before I step into a full on match.

Tribes Ascend does practically the same with new players. To actually learn anything you just drop into the game and play. Just because T:A offers a few video links and offline map mode doesn't change much in the grand scheme of things. No new players will learn anything significant from running around a map alone or vs dumb targets. I'll grant you it's a useful feature to have however but I think it's a real stretch to say this is a big help to new players. If anything it benefits veterans more as they understand the game and can apply offline knowledge/practice to online play.

I'd like some evidence of this. I can't find any, the game has great reviews, whenever I log in plenty of people are playing, and I still see friends online from closed beta. Yet I keep hearing "the game didnt do so good" and aside from the fact that Tribes needs more skill, I see little evidence that it is suffering at all.

I actually prefer the Mercenaries online style of Tutorial.

I disagree, it changes alot in the grand scheme of things. being able to take a mech you just built into a map byyourself will alow you to test its heat efficiancy, and find good weapon groupings without worry. also it gives you a chance to learn simple piloting, navagation and the many parts of the map letting you know where good cover and ambush points may or maynot be. I will grant you the faxt that you cant learn everything from simply running around a map by yourself or shooting at bots that dont shoot back, you cant learn tactics, advanced piloting tricks, or advanced game play mechanics BUT it dose give you a place and operunity to practice them.

Tribes is a fantastic game. I can still find a match any time, day or night. I may not play at all for a few weeks, then hop back in and play it exclusively for a month. I can say the same about Skyrim, Guild Wars 2 and MWO for that matter. A single game doesn't need to be the only thing you're playing to be considered successful - especially a Buy to Play or Free to Play game.

Their ROAM MAP and TARGET PRACTICE modes are not the end all, be all of tutorial modes, but they are sandbox experiences that allow you to practice and learn without being a detriment to your team during actual play.

Considering some of the "OMFG NOOB! SHUT DOWN AND UNINSTALL." attitudes found in MWO already, providing a safe haven to test builds, learn maps and generally get a feel for the game would be something everyone could benefit from, regardless of their skill level.

You could add team support to these kinds of modes as well, allowing competitive players a chance to work on terrain tactics and coordination, check lines of sight, ranges and speed routes to key areas like choke points and capture points.

A full tutorial should absolutely be implemented, but this could be a good place to start.

The on thing PGI can learn from Tribes is to not name the game "MWO: Ascend".

Maybe reasonable prices. I understand that this is a F2P game. It's awesome. I like it a lot. The graphics are great, the combat is great. The customization is spot on. But, the reality is that it could NOT have been released as a standalone, $60 game. There is absolutely zero AI and no single player. Still needs more maps (I know they will prob be added). And, prices are INSANE. They want like $30, $40, per mech. That's just ridiculous. What if you could have paid $60 for a full game with SP and access to everything at more reasonable speed... it's clear they're trying to milk people willing to drop some $ for more than they should reasonably pay.


Also this game is not comparable to a subscription based game because it is an online game not an MMO which is why I make the $60 comparison and what makes their prices quite ridiculous. I would drop money on this game if it would go further.

Oh wait I had a reply in mind.
I see MWO slowly getting there, because back then Ascend was beta we didn't have target practice at first, but slowly they started adding more and more into it.

I'm thinking a few months, maybe by the summertime, we'll have a more forgiving set of tutorials on MWO to the point where people start using our game for comparison with the next big F2P game that comes out.
