At the moment I about to finish working on my Ravens and I'm looking for a heavier sniper. I'm looking at 2 at the moment: Dragons and Catapults.

The dragons are nice because of the speed. I can run to a sniping spot and run away without any worries.

Catapults are nice because the weapons are placed high in the mech so i can just have a small part of my mech peeking while sniping.

I'm not sure how each builds with various loadouts... which would also affect the choice. The more weight it can carry, the better. More gausses+ammo/erppcs...

Any thoughts?

Or if anyone knows where I can find a loadout simulator (for the calculations) that would be even better! Thanks.

Remlab is a decent build simulator. As far as building a sniper, it will depend on what you want to snipe with, and note...if you want to build a heavy sniper that the Cataphract is also an option. the locations of the mounts for the weapons you want to use is important as well if you want to try to fire from partial cover.

MWO Mechbay:

For pure flexibility, Cat for sure. Can fill alot of roles with 3 chassis. Direct fire, sniper, missile boat.

The Catapult-C1(I'm pretty sure that's the one with 4 energy hardpoints) and any Dragon variant really are on par with each other, as Dual PPC + JJs's and Gauss PPC are on equal levels.

As for The K2, that is on the same level as the Cataphract. The k2 and phract are on another level with sniping just for the larger number of ballistic hardpoints and overall bigger weight allowing them to mount the bigger weapons needed to be truly effective snipers.

i feel like the cat was easier and fun when i was less experienced. but now i like the dragon so mutch more.
cat for dual gaus sniper -> stay top of a hill and feel cool cause u get so many kills
dragon for 105kph alpha flanker with high armor -> feel cool cause u bring chaos into the the enemy blob
trolling > kills

Get Cataphract 3D for sniping. 2 ballistic and 4 energy hard points gets you just about every sniper weapon combo you can think of (except 3 gauss or 3 UAC5 or 4 AC2) that you can get with another phract. The jump jets are a huge benefit for sniper play. The 3D is like a cat K2 with jump jets and same speed. K2 sniper is only cat w/o JJ's for some reason. Now that the phracts are available, I think the K2 is pretty much an obsolete mech. With max engine and speed bonus, the 3D can reach 85 kph to maneuver. Not as fast as a speedy dragon but as fast as a stock dragon. Decide what's more important. Ground speed get dragon sniper. Jump jets and more load out options get phract. I wouldn't buy a catapult for a sniping role.

If any decision has the Catapult in it, buy the Catapult.

The only reason you have to buy a Dragon is if you simply like the mech or want to screw around in the underdog.

Dragon DRG-5N
280/300XL (usually obtained from another mech)
2 Large Lasers
1 Gauss Rifle with 3-4t ammo
Endo Steel
11-12 DHS
Advanced Zoom: Useful.
Ferro Fibrous: Now that there's no R&R, FF may get you 1.0-1.5 tons of extra space but criticals become quite tight
Beagle Probe: A brilliant addition to this mech, if you can find the space to squeeze it in.

My sniper build and the way I loved to make my Dragons. Can quickly reach a forward sniping point and deal reasonable damage out to ~700m, still able to do bits out as far as 900m with the lasers and beyond with the Gauss. As the battle comes closer, it has the speed and mobility to move back or if you have numerical and positional advantage you can use your speed to press forward and the arm mounted weapons make for highly accurate tools :)

Had many of my best rounds in a Dragon built like this. Probably my most fun mech build to date.

The Dragon is a useless piece of junk. The CAT - K2 is one of the best snipermechs ingame. Anyone telling you otherwise is not success - orientated. 1 Gauss and 2 LL hmmm, a snipermech...for sure.... :) 4LL / 4PPC / 2Gau those are sniperbuilds on a heavy mech.

Look at all this terrible advice!

Here's what you want to snipe with: gauss rifles. 2 of them. Get a Catapult-K2 and put them in the side torsos. Add a backup laser or two, Get an XL 250-300 engine (because who hits the side torsos on a catapult anyways?) You need at the very least 5 tons of ammo. You don't need any extra heat sinks.

Once you learn how to use the gaussapult, then you can try these other chassis, experimental builds, different weapons, etc. But gauss is still the king, baby.

My K2 build:

XL 255
1 Gauss Rifle (3 tons of ammo)
2 PPC
2 ML
14 DHS

I used to run 2 gauss, 5 tons of ammo, AMS and no PPCs or extra heatsinks.

I like this build better overall. especially if your armor gets stripped, your gauss rifle is going to pop, leaving you punchless.

Best sniper build: Raven 3L with ecm, and an ER PPC and a MLAS. (XL 295) Is there anything a raven can't do?
Mobile, stealthy and stylish. 10/10

K2 is the only real sniper mech in this game. The only sniper that allows you to fire from a hull down position, just like a real sniper. I wont consider the 4X Phract a real sniper as you need to expose the mech fully in order to fire both Gauss.
