I have mostly had an Atlas ride since CB. I have always focused builds around energy weapons (LL when possible) and some form of short range missiles.

I just bought a Stalker 5m, and after a few different builds, I must say it is a lot of fun now.

STD 300 engine (57.1k without speed tweak)

LL and SRM6 in each arm
(I love large lasers on the stalker. If you can just see the very top of a target, you can hit it. They are mounted so high, it is a blast firing when just peaking over hills or other obstacles and being mostly shielded)

3xSSRM2's in torsos

22 DHS (heat is mostly a non-issue when firing weapon groups individually - I can get in about 4 alpha's before overheating)

I own 3 different Atlases and it is hard to go back to them.

I dunno... As much as I would like to try one, I don't like the thought of being in an Assault without ECM right now.

I enjoyed playing around with the trial stalker, although in the end I decided it's not for me. I like my Atlas more. Still, it's a fun mech to toy with once in a while.

I must say though, going against a Stalker when in my Cataphract is not a good day for me if I'm alone fighting it 1 on 1. Stalkers can be beasty. My most memorable fight has been when I rounded on a damaged Stalker. I went "OMG OH ****, BACK UP BACK UP!" lol and hit reverse. Only thing that helped me survive was that the Stalker's right torso was orange so I kept pounding that until he lost half his weapons. By then I finally had help and managed to kill him off with three others there, and I had a deep red CT. One more hit I would have been dead.

Yes, my D-DC will likely always be a staple for me.

But if you like firing lasers, give the stalker a try.

It is hard to describe but they just feel like you have so more more control over where they hit and what they should not hit, simply because of the high placement of the hardpoints on the Stalker.

I can even fire over many different mechs standing in front of me.

Assaults without ecm are perfectly fine. Only mech type you don't want to run without ecm is light mechs.
