I am thinking of investing 1.5 mil for the Double heat sink. My Atlas has tons of free slots ATM. Just wish to ask a few questions.

1. Does the engine DHS still count as 2.0, not 1.4?

2. Does DHS raise the overheat threshold? If yes, by how much?

3. Is there any reason NOT to get DHS when your mech has lots of free slots?

Thanks.

1. Yes. Engine DHS are 2.0, exterior are 1.4.
2. Yes, by 1.4 compared to the SH 1.0.
3. Nope. There's also no reason not to get DHS when your mech has no free slots as long as you have a 250+ engine. Converting ten engine sinks into DHS nets you the equivalent of a free ten tonnes of exterior SH.

Stats on items and a nifty online mechlab can be found here: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/
Just click on the mech variant you have and play around in the mechlab to see what difference it will make.

On an atlas (and any assault). Double heat sinks is usually a downgrade so make sure you do the math before you switch

Also im not convinced engine heat sinks are 2.0. Ive done some tests and 10 dhs mechs have same dissapation as 14shs mechs. Also 20shs mechs are more heat efficient than. 10dhs mechs

Straight from the horse's mouth:

1) Double heat sinks internal to the engine are set to increase the heat scale by 2 points and provide -0.2 heat/sec cooling. Double heat sinks that you add to your Mech increase the heat scale by 1.4 points and provide -0.14 heat/sec cooling. (For reference, single heat sinks increase the scale by 1 and cool -0.1 heat/sec. The heat scale starts at 30 and is then is increased based on the heat sinks in your Mech.)

Did you run those tests before the November bugfix? For a while there engine DHS were only functioning as regular heatsinks.

Heat rating is almost always better with an Assault. A four LL STD 300 Atlas RS is the only example I can think of of a mech that benefits from staying SH. Slightly lower heat dissipation with 36 SH than 22 DHS, but with a slightly higher max heat threshold and more separate items meaning less lost to crits (though crits happen so seldom with 10 HP heatsinks that that's not so much a concern). If you were running it with a downgraded or XL engine then SH come out on top, but that's a pretty extreme example.

My mech is AS7-D DC, with dual UAC5, dual LLaser, and triple SSRM2 as weapons. 325 Standard Engine (for the 3x DHS) and Endo Steel internal.

I calculated it using the site and I can get 100% use out of both the tonnage and the slots if I use DHS. Total of 15 DHS. Hope they can support those LLasers and UAC5s on full speed.

I think of this differently - I believe any mech that produces so much heat that he can only work with single heat sinks is probably inefficient and not getting the most bang for his buck, respectively tonnage.

Instead of running a 4LL build with 40 single heat sinks, better run a build 3 LLs and a Gauss Rifle and 20 DHS, for example.
