And yes, the game looks like hairy arse in this vision mode compared to normal vision, so it's a shame so many feel they have to keep it on constantly.

Watch some "Let's Play"s of Mechwarrior 2 and all you'll see anyone use is Enhanced Imaging.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGGGGGG
I myself never used it because I like looking at actual terrain, not a field of dark blue and blobs of heat.

My biggest point is that people use it for their default setting to the point where they can't operate their own eyes. Instead of it being indeed an enhanced version of their vision, thermal is their standard mode of vision, making normal vision a subpar setting due to how they're perceiving how much they NEEEEED thermal.
It's kind of like coffee. You drink coffee not to bring you up past baseline, but to bring you up TO baseline, since coffee sends you up and then crashes you down below where you'd be if you never drank it at all. So your baseline is what becomes skewed; you run a lower setting where now you HAVE to have that morning coffee or you're not up to baseline, then boost that with more coffee to take you over base. Coffee works but so does giving up coffee.

Before, thermal was mostly used for long-range sniping or frozen city blizzard. Now with ECM, it's the go to scout vision so you can actually see where people are going, even if all you notice is a slight bit of glowy movement behind a hill, it's information you wouldn't have gotten if you were on normal or night vision.

Outside of Caustic Valley I use it most of the time (aside from times when I want to orient for navigation, which is when I use normal vision (or night vision in RC night)).
Thermal also seems to be the only way to use Gauss Rifles or PPCs at longer ranges (i.e. 800m+), as it seems to be almost impossible to spot enemies at these distances with normal vision, unless they are standing free in the landscape.

Not even asking for picmip or model changes here, just brightskinning.

You basically have to use thermal at least early on in the battle and it is really DULL.
Give me a line of sight targeting module even if it won't produce missile locks so I can simply have a little red box and a bleep and I'll stop feeling compelled to look at the world through predator vision. I really just want my radar to work again. ECM should not be masking LOS targets. It is an ELECTRONIC countermeasure. It doesn't bend light rays.
