Decrease the range of Thermal vision and a lot of the issues people have with it would solve themselves. Basically make it so that it's useful in seeing a little bit farther during the Frozen City blizzards, but not so powerful it's the go-to method of scouting the enemy's movement from your own freakin' spawnpoint.

And yes, the game looks like hairy arse in this vision mode compared to normal vision, so it's a shame so many feel they have to keep it on constantly.

OP has no idea...

Watch some "Let's Play"s of Mechwarrior 2 and all you'll see anyone use is Enhanced Imaging.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGGGGGG

I myself never used it because I like looking at actual terrain, not a field of dark blue and blobs of heat.

My biggest point is that people use it for their default setting to the point where they can't operate their own eyes. Instead of it being indeed an enhanced version of their vision, thermal is their standard mode of vision, making normal vision a subpar setting due to how they're perceiving how much they NEEEEED thermal.

It's kind of like coffee. You drink coffee not to bring you up past baseline, but to bring you up TO baseline, since coffee sends you up and then crashes you down below where you'd be if you never drank it at all. So your baseline is what becomes skewed; you run a lower setting where now you HAVE to have that morning coffee or you're not up to baseline, then boost that with more coffee to take you over base. Coffee works but so does giving up coffee.

It's not just that, even teams with ECM moving to a flanking position behind cover are given away by the slight glow you can see just above them when they're close to a ridge line or behind a building.

Before, thermal was mostly used for long-range sniping or frozen city blizzard. Now with ECM, it's the go to scout vision so you can actually see where people are going, even if all you notice is a slight bit of glowy movement behind a hill, it's information you wouldn't have gotten if you were on normal or night vision.

always using thermal vision, really useful in spotting targets, imho cold mechs (below 20% heat) shouldn`t be so contrastingly visible on environment

Same here with regards to Thermal vision.
Outside of Caustic Valley I use it most of the time (aside from times when I want to orient for navigation, which is when I use normal vision (or night vision in RC night)).

Thermal also seems to be the only way to use Gauss Rifles or PPCs at longer ranges (i.e. 800m+), as it seems to be almost impossible to spot enemies at these distances with normal vision, unless they are standing free in the landscape.

I struggle to aim at specific components with it- I might sue it to initially identify enemies, but not during brawls.

Making night vision suck less would be a wonderful start in getting thermal vision back to a specific-uses vision mode and not the default. The fact that I can see farther with normal eyeballs in River City Night than I can with night vision half the time is garbage. As is the fact that everything is so flim-flammin' shiny. No. Bad night vision. The world is not suddenly covered in varnish at night, and I'd appreciate it if my NV mode reflected (or not, as the case may be) that fact.

EDIT: Nuke...out of your house. Now <_<

A friend of mine compiled a suggestion regarding this. If you guys feel something should be done about Thermal vision, then go and make your voice heard. <_<

Thermal vision is ridiculously good. At the start of the game I can use it to bombard the enemy team with AC. That being said, as long as ECM is providing stealth, thermal is a necessary evil.

Just let me brightskin people's 'Mechs and I wouldn't use thermal.

Not even asking for picmip or model changes here, just brightskinning.

Started to hate Thermal Vision also. The reason is that I am using it 80% of the time, because "I have to". No matter is it dark, foggy or too bright.. you have to use it to see further. And when in the battle, you see things way more clear especially when under heavy missile or ballistic fire.

I agree that thermal vision should be useless to say... 600+ meters away. I mean, at the moment especially with ECM thermal is pretty much best vision mode for almost every situation. Only place where people dont really use thermal is caustic valley.

I use it nearly 24/7 unless a team isn't ECM heavy. It's invaluable for spotting anything beyond 300m.

Personally, I despise all the vision modes.

I just turn my monitor off and play with headphones.

Profiteer nails it.
You basically have to use thermal at least early on in the battle and it is really DULL.

Give me a line of sight targeting module even if it won't produce missile locks so I can simply have a little red box and a bleep and I'll stop feeling compelled to look at the world through predator vision. I really just want my radar to work again. ECM should not be masking LOS targets. It is an ELECTRONIC countermeasure. It doesn't bend light rays.
