I think there may have been a non-open-source payware application for using directx under linux, but I can't remember the name, and have no idea how well it worked.
Sorry if my info is wrong/out of date!

you are quite wrong wine has been able to handle DX since i started using it in 08
for the OP if you want to see how a game will run in wine go to www.winehq.org
here is the stat list for MWO http://appdb.winehq....rsion&iId=26957

Steam may be on Linux, but there are few games that have been ported. The major factor is DirectX. That does not work under Linux. I think after the Devs get DX11 working, they should add OpenGL and port to Linux. Right now MWO has pushed me back to Windows for Games.

just because steam has a linux client doesn't mean MWO would magically work through it. they would still have to port the game over or work with the winedev team to set up a working wine port

Just because Steam has a linux client does not mean all steam games will.
TF2 recently offered Linux compatibility, and that's about it. Even if we get MWO on steam doesn't mean it will automagically be functional on all platforms Steam runs on.

It is a public knowledge that Linux is great for everything but games...

Did not realize that my keyboard invisibly typed "automagically", my bad.
To the point though MWO just needs some love to get quicker on WINE.
Also the better they make it for windows the better it will become for WINE.

Just run a windows XP/7 VM on your linux.
This should get you MUCH better results than WINE.

Not sure how much I'd trust that Bronze rating, as it seems his computer probably would have gotten similar performance in windows. Need someone with windows on a decent system fares to see how it compares realistically.
