The planet Sevren, November 3051. After more than a year of waiting, the Clan invasion has renewed. Sevren is a world only recently reclaimed in 3024 by the Lyran Commonwealth from the Draconis Combine, and now it is under attack once again, this time by Clan Wolf. Though the Clans are better understood than they were a year ago, victories are still few and far between. On Sevren, the 25th Arcturan Guards did their best to hold the line, and have certainly bloodied the Wolf’s nose, but their light forces and commando warfare have proven insufficient to hold the planet. The order to evacuate has gone out.

In the city of Saddleport, the Lyran defense is in shambles. They are cut-off from their command, disorganised, damaged and injured, and outnumbered. A small group of soldiers, mercenaries and ne’er-do-wells attempt to get themselves and any civilians they can through a thousand kilometres of enemy territory to New Cartris, where the last few DropShips are loading up.

This RP is intended to be invite only. As so often happens, I announced that I was thinking of running an RP, and immediately had ten gazillion player requests. So, to prevent that getting out of hand, I’m limiting it to just those I’ve invited. If we start to lose numbers, I’ll consider inviting some more.

I’d like to keep this story moving, so if you want to play in it, I expect a benchmark of a couple of posts a week. Useful, story-related posts in the OOC thread can help count towards that if you’ve not got much to do, but ideally, go find something to do instead (or PM me; I’m quite permissive as a GM, so I’ll probably find a way to say yes).

As far as themes go, I want to focus on the characters’ lack of resources. The Clans are an obstacle, but the main question isn’t “Can we defeat the Clans?”, more “How do we get past them without outside support, repair facilities, the ability to move through open terrain, etc.”

As far as characters go, I’m open to pretty much anyone who would be involved in such an evacuation, as long as they don’t go against the above “lack of resources” theme in brute ways (no commanders of regiment-strong BattleMech units, for instance). More subtle ways (like a black marketeer on the run, for instance) are cool, though. Leftenant Adrianna Delfino of the 25th Arcturan Guards will be my main tool for steering the story.

So without further ado, let's see some character bios!

Name: Dirk Bradbury
Callsign: Brains
Date of Birth/Age: September 2nd, 3014, 37.
Current Mech: Helepolis HEP-3H "Messer". In the seven years since Tombstone, the Messer has gone through extensive refitting, now utilizing an Endo-steel structure, XL 375 Engine, and extra pair of jumpjets. This allows the mech a movement speed of 86.4 kph and a jump distance of 150m. The entire weapons loadout has been removed, with a smaller, customized Thumper Artillery Piece taking the place of the Sniper it previously carried. The head medium laser was removed for a command console, and the left arm laser has been replaced with an Extended Range Large Laser and machine gun. A second machine gun in the center torso rounds out the arsenal. Three tonnes of ammunition for the Thumper in the right torso allow Dirk to keep up a persistent barrage for some time, with the third tonne divided into two half tonne bins of smoke and illum rounds. A single half tonne of ammunition for the machine guns in the left torso allow for adequate usage of the machine guns.

House Affiliation: None. Hails from the Lyran Commonwealth, but never particularly cared for nationalities or other such abstract concepts.

Military History: Began a scholarship at NAIS when he was 18 in 3032, straight out of school in mechanics. Transferred to Battlemech Technology in his first year. Dropped from the course. Reenrolled in Electrical Engineering in Aerospace Design in his second year, and was kicked from the course when it was found he had spend three months attending modules in Applied Particle Physics for Laser Based Weaponry. This trend continued, with Dirk starting and stopping courses as his attention was grabbed by newer and more 'shiny' things. Eventually in his fourth year, he successfully finished a year of a course on battlemech training - but was booted from the academy in his fourth year when he was caught stealing components from the university's training mechs to 'Test a theory'. What the theory was, he never told the university - but they did receive a letter in 3039 saying 'It worked - Good thing the FedCom started a war for me to test it in. -Dirk.'
Dirk was a founding member of the Tombstone Barbershop Quartet during the DC attack on New Ivaarsen in 3039, together with Remi Rudbeck, Sierra Mueller, and their leader Nikolai Reznov. Since then, the Quartet has found Dirk to be a 'Human Swiss Army Knife of Discarded Hobbies'. More than once the Quartet has fled behind the safety of thick walls as Dirk muttered something like:
"Demolitions? I spent a couple of days making fireworks once. Lemme see. Oh, I like this. And that. Don't know what that does. Hmmm...which wire is it goes here? Stand back please, this'll either work or it won't..."
Sierra has been known to comment that there is a frighteningly small amount of things Dirk hasn't tried to break at least once or doesn't have a plan to do so that he simply hasn't had the chance to try yet.
Dirk has now been with the Quartet for just over twelve years, and the time has served to instill a certain amount of discipline and hardness into the eccentric Mechanic turned Mechwarrior. Too many close calls and ambushes while providing fire support to the Quartet, not to mention dead friends in the Quartet's support elements, has forced a raw, grim focus during combat. He often leaves his mech after an op covered in sweat and unwilling to talk, even on the rare occasions that not even a single shot is fired. Out of combat, the Quartet has stopped pretending that with Dirk around that anyone else is the chief tech, and simply slapped the job and responsibility on him. As a result, the Quartet's vehicles and equipment are rarely quite the same between missions and the repair bay is at best in a constant state of quasiorganized chaos.

Physical description: Roughly average height with short brown/blonde hair, blue eyes and glasses. Heavily scarred, burned, and calloused hands and arms. His face and several other parts of his body bear scars shaped oddly like drops of spattered liquid or small splinters. If pressed, Dirk will somewhat sheepishly admit that he often gets so excited he completely forgets to use safety gear before he breaks out the arc welders and other dangerous tools. Tends to wear ratty, comfortable and durable clothes. His trousers and long heavy jacket look not unlike that of a fireman's - the rest of the quartet roll their eyes if asked but Dirk says he doesn't like to be slowed down by the need to get changed when he has an idea. They're unclean, pitted, burned, and much repaired - and full of assorted tools, pens, pencils and paper. In the past, he has broken out wrenches, stanley knives and even a hand held blowtorch from the depths of his pockets, but he now also carries a plain, yet exquisitely maintained laser pistol with a small stamp on the back of the barrel and several spare batteries in addition to his usual paraphernalia.

Open Background: Dirk has severe ADD, which causes as many problems as it solves. Highly intelligent, Dirk spends much time reading as many books as he can get his hands on - usually for less than an hour before he scampers off scribbling on a crumpled notepad muttering to himself. The Quartet more often find him stripping a mech of the weapon he was supposed to reload "because I can make it better, look!" than actually reloading it. In combat, he's nearly always the first to lay eyes on an enemy, but also agitated and terse on the comms. Still, the Quartet finds it useful to have a resident mad scientist in the unit with no moral qualms about anything. The extra babysitting required tends to pay off, eventually.

His mech, Messer, is another tale. On a fairly routine mission in the Sarna March, on the war torn 'Small World', the Tombstone Barbershop Quartet were involved in heavy mountain fighting, committing headhunting missions for the Duchy of Oriente. While fighting through a particularly infamous pass, a rockslide was triggered. The Barbershop had chosen their ground well, triggering their jump jets to get out of the way, and their opponents were crushed. The slide however, bore unexpected fruit, a battered and crushed mech poking out of the rubble. Curious, Dirk Bradbury piloted his Shadow Hawk to the wreck, and despite protests from the rest of the Quartet and began to pull it out. As the ruined mech began to take shape, it was recognised by another member of the Quartet and Dirk decided to salvage it. Dragging it clear of the pass while the remainder of the Quartet swiftly began their own roles in salvage, the Helepolis was evacuated by one of the carrier VTOLs.
Upon completion of their mission and returning to base, the Quartet's chief tech informed Dirk that the Helepolis' damage was not too extreme, and it could be salvaged - if they could find the parts, or at least some they could jury rig to work. It took three long years before the mech could be used, with parts bought from collectors, antique dealers, and others undergoing extensive work before they could be fitted to the ancient design. Messer has now tirelessly served Dirk for a further seven years and undergone additional work to completely replace the internal structure and engine with bulkier, but lighter endo-steel and XL versions. Room was made by downgrading the Sniper to a Thumper, which causes less collateral damage - in the long term, the reduction of firepower has proved to be more advantageous to the Quartet and their predominantly 'Smash and Grab' orientated missions. The Messer can now keep pace with the rest of the unit without holding them back and even hold it's own, to a point, in straight up combat.

In 3043 Dirk began officially seeing Sierra Meuller, the Quartet's resident kleptomaniac. Their relationship continued for three years through varying degrees of resistance by the fiercely independant Sierra before they were married in July of 3046. Their daughter Amelia was born in February of 3047. Dirk and Sierra have each been forbidden from allowing her to follow in their footsteps, with absolutely no success whatsoever.

Dirk has come to Sevren with Messer and a couple of the units technicians while the Quartet is undergoing a 'quiet' period. As it's mechwarriors had aged, the Quartet had been undergoing more of these breaks, which Dirk didn't really mind. It allowed him to use more of his saved cache of C-Bills to finish, start, continue and abandon various projects and generally amuse himself. He'd decided to visit Sevren to attend several conferences and lectures on Nuclear reactor technology, hoping to learn more about precisely how the fusion engines used by battlemechs worked. He was sure he could figure out a way to make an XL engine take up less space, but he just wasn't sure how.

Deep Background: At least that's what he'd told Sierra and the others. While it definitely was something he would be doing, the main reason he'd snuck away was to try and get his hands on some clan technology. The strange invaders had been pushing further and further into the Inner Sphere and he knew the others were worried about it, but he couldn't help but be excited. He'd been trying to get his hands on some for a year, since he'd begun hearing how advanced it was, but there was next to none of it staying out of House hands unless one was very close to the front.
When Dirk had heard a black market dealer he knew to be handling the stuff was on Sevren, he'd resolved to get very close to the front indeed.
Additionally, despite maturing significantly, Dirk still desperately seeks for the approval of those around him. Whether he was unloved as a child or simply wants someone to appreciate his designs no one knows, but it doesn't matter. If accompanied by his friends, this isn't a problem, but alone...Of all the Quartet, Dirk remains the one most likely to break under pressure - if not as likely as he had been in the past.

Name: Asfrid Malgalm
Callsign: Scotty
Date of Birth/Age: August 13th, 3030, 21.

Current Mech: The Flying Scotsman. ((Has absolutely zero do with with PotC in any way. I get asked a lot, so there's the answer. :3 ))

Mech Bio:
Modified TBT-7M. The Scotsman has been modified for easier underwater work, a necessary function on Asfrid's home planet of Blue Hole. Namely, the NARC and the other missile systems have been replaced with Streak SRM2 systems to limit the potential for collateral damage to equipment or facilities, the laser system is equipped with two medium lasers on the right arm, and a TAG on the left. The engine is an oversized XL325 to assist with the extra resistance of underwater movement, and the head is equipped with a floodlight system to assist crews with low-light underwater repairs.

The Flying Scotsman has been repainted from its previous blue on light blue urban pattern to a white, blue and black digital camo intended to scatter light and make it a difficult target to spot. The paint is fresh and new, and the mech has clearly not seen any real abuse. It runs solidly, but as though a real mechanic hasn't tuned it in a while. The cockpit smells... lived in. A sleeping bag and some sundries lay piled in the back, strapped down with cables and netting.

Commandeered, or rather "pilfered" from her home estate's security force, the Scotsman has been Asfrid's source of income since her family cut off tuition to the Academy, ending her short stint there after her second year. She only has limited experience operating 'Mechs in simulations and training exercises. If she has any real combat experience, she keeps it to herself, instead relying on her long list of noncombat escort missions as proof of her reliability.

Character Bio:
Asfrid stands at five feet and ten inches, and weighs around one hundred and thirty-five pounds. She has scraggly dark brown hair which is usually pulled back in a greasy bun or tail, revealing an equally greasy face and two blue eyes. Typically, she is wearing her thick leather-on-cloth jumpsuit.

Spending more than a year sleeping on grimy cots or in her cockpit has left her with a very tired demeanor, and tends to keep to herself. Though typically amiable, she has a tendency to become easily frustrated and get short with people. She also has a tendency to smoke pungent cigars, much to the chagrin of those present in closed quarters with her. She has an entire ammo box filled to the brim with these.

History:
Asfrid Malgalm is one of six children of Reginald Malgalm, a water-mining land-owner on Blue Hole. Their large freshwater recovery facilities supply integral drinking water to the Inner Sphere, making the business lucratively profitable. As such, they employ their own small fleet of 'Mechs and facilities to maintain and protect them.

When she was young, Asfrid befriended the maintenance foreman at her estate, an old pilot. He taught her some of the basics of piloting and maintenance, but her parents very quickly found out and had him transferred out of their estate's security post to another facility. After this happened, Asfrid had an insatiable fascination with 'Mechs, trying to sneak into the bay and toy with them whenever possible. Despite her parents encouraging her to work with the family, she applied and was accepted to the local Academy at eighteen, and completed two years before losing her financial support.

She has been hopping planet to planet in different security crews on missions without any combat, taking one-way work from one planet to the other for more than a year. In an attempt to avoid areas too densely packed with people who may recognize her or the Scotsman, she has been slowly moving away from the center of the Inner Sphere, taking her dangerously close to where the excitement is. Now, she finds herself taking a mission to Sevren with a little more risk than she is used to. Anything can happen.

1 engraved zippo lighter
1 fedora
3 suits
6 changes of clothes
237 C-Bills
Open Background:
James' family moved from Donegal to Gallery in the early 3000's, towards the end of the mining boom. James was born of a miner and a store clerk. Gallery is mostly populated by Greek families so James felt out of place from the start.(Made that part up, but hey!) He played rugby until age 18 where he was often disciplined for fighting. Once he hit 16 he began to run packages for the Soiphios family. As he turned 18 he was given more and more responsibilities and was able to move up the ranks through his dedication to the family and love for violence. Kevin left school early to travel around the Province and help the family wherever he could. This left Kevin with little physical schooling, so much of his learning is from books or vids and the conclusions he draws from them. Limited ability with numbers or spelling but good technical knowledge and a fierce determination to his own view of how the Inner Sphere should be ruled (political philosophy).

The trip to Sevren is to obtain profit for the Soiphios family and increase its influence outside of the limited Donegal Province.

Deep Background:
Kevin has lived much of his life with various neurosis and psychosis. He has OCD and likes things in the order he places them. He also has trouble sleeping and is in love for fire and violence. All this combined led him to trouble in his younger years. The crew he brought with loves him for the most part, but their loyalty to the Family knows no bounds. He has hopes of one day running a Family of his own and breaking ties with the Soiphios Family.

Name: Sergeant Donovan Tang
Callsign: Donny-Boy
Date of Birth/Age: 6 Dec 3027 (age 24 as of the start of the RP)
Current Vehicle: CN9-D Centurion – Donovan pilots a stock Centurion which was assigned to him when he joined the 25th Arcturan Guard. On Sevren, he is currently down to one salvo of LRMs, one ton of ammo for the LBX-10 carried by his Centurion and the medium lasers carried by his Centurion with no resupply available at the moment until linking up with the main body of the Guards.

House Affiliation: Currently serving in the 25th Arcturan Guard, under the command of Leutnant Adrianna Delfino. Donovan is a member of the Free Skye movement, though he is decidedly of a more moderate bent than those who advocate military action in order to achieve an independent Skye.

Military History: Graduated in the upper half of the class of 3049 from Sanglamore Military Academy on the planet of Skye, Donovan was not accepted into any of the Skye Rangers units and chose instead to accept a posting to the 25th Arcturan Guards. An average pilot, Donovan has excellent marksmanship but tends to mismanage his ammunition by being trigger happy.

After being assigned to the 25th Arcturan Guards, he has mainly performed garrison duty on the planet with his unit. The Clan invasion was Donovan’s first combat experience.

Character Bio: Donovan stands at 5’ 8” tall and a fairly stocky 200lbs, having black hair and brown eyes due to his Oriental background. Fairly fit due to the military regimen, Donovan has an easy-going smile and a scar across the back of his left hand due to a training accident at Sanglamore. His usual outfit consists of a pilot’s jumpsuit with a brown leather bomber jacket when the weather permits it. An M&G Flechette pistol is his usual sidearm, though he has not found himself using it much outside of the gun range as the pistol is not very useful in ‘Mech combat.

Hailing from the planet of Rahne in the Federation of Skye, Donovan decided to join the military due to a desire to the see the galaxy at large on the government’s dime. His parents were merchants who owned a grocery store, and with five kids in the family, tried their best to provide for the family. Being the third child, and the youngest boy, Donovan wanted to get out of the shadow of his older brothers who were local businessmen and decided to join the military as a way of distinguishing himself. Having the ability to speak English, German, Mandarin, and a smattering of Scots he finds it easy to make friends and is fairly jovial towards everyone. One problem that Donovan seems to face from his fellow Arcturan Guards, however, is the disdain shown towards those who come from Skye and are in favour of the Free Skye movement, though thankfully Leutnant Delfino did not take part in some of the derision directed towards Donovan.

Name: Guy J. Marlowe

Callsign: “Your Guy in the know”

Mech: IrTech IR-200 HRC-1734 Professional Camera.

Date of Birth: November 5th, 3022.

House Affiliation: Growing up on Solaris VII where the cost to switch citizenship from one Great House to another takes nothing more than a fist full of Cbills, Guy has no real preference for one house or another. Currently his citizenship resides with House Steiner, having switched his official citizenship after losing a bet to one of his long time readers.

Description: 5'8 on a good day, though he makes up in ego what he lacks in height. Guy is dark haired (starting to gray at the temples) and fair skinned. Though he's lost his “military fit” form from his infantry days Guy is still relatively in shape, though love handles are starting to show. His pale blue eyes are striking and have served him well with the ladies in the past.

Bio: Born on the Gladiator world of Solaris VII during the closing years of the Third Succession War to uneducated, underpaid, and overworked parents in the subsidized wards of Montenegro district Guy Marlowe was, at one time a wide eyed and easily impressionable child, though any naivety has long sense been replaced by a sarcastic and jaded soul. Though praised for intelligence and artistic aptitude, Guy rarely applied himself in school and dropped out as soon as he was old enough to legally sign the appropriate papers. Soon after dropping out school Guy found himself cast out of his families small one bedroom apartment by his father, any love shared between the two of them having disappeared years before. Unwilling to accept charity and with no where to call home the sixteen year old Guy Marlowe enlisted as an infantrymen within the Free Worlds League Military (FWLM).
Testing high enough on his entrance scores to have his pick of available infantry or support fields Guy chose military journalism. A field that both paid better, and seemed less dangerous than going toe to toe with Lyran mechs with nothing save a laser rifle. Guy completed nearly five years of military service, receiving high praise for his writings in the FWLM's Eagle Standard (a news paper printed and distributed to units across the League by The League Central Coordination and Command), before being discharged. The reason for his discharge was not made public but when pressed Guy will claim that he was “a bad solider” who “liked to nap and steal stuff” and “eat candy and drink bourbon while on duty”.

Returning to his native Solaris, Guy made a living freelance writing articles for the various tabloids that covered the underground fighting circuit. During this time period he would become known as one of the preeminent “indie” journalists on the Games world. His foul mouthed and snarky writing attracting a loyal band of dedicated readers which grew steadily until Guy Marlowe was a well known figure in the gaming circuit, with fortunes won and lost at betting parlors based solely off of his predictions.
Unfortunately, as news of the Clan invasion gripped the Innersphere and bootlegged copies of the battles against the unknown invaders started making their way to the commercial market interest in the gladiator games began to wane rapidly a drunken Guy Marlowe booked passage to the clan front determined to “Give the people what they want”

Notes: Guy uses a fancy Camera, the best money can buy. He isn't a professional photographer by any means, but he does have a natural eye for snapping images, and when that fails he just takes an obscene amount. Buying into words of wisdom he learned while being a journalist in the FWLM “If seven thousand of them are bad, and one is good. That's a pay check”

Yay the thread is up! On another note - since Lt. Delfino is fielding a PHX-3D, with more advanced tech, I will switch over to the CN9-D instead of the CN9-A, to more fit the speed that the PHX-3D has.

Hope to have a post up soon as well.

Name: Constantin Semyonov
Callsign: Voodoo
Date of Birth/Age: July 18th, 3024, 27.

Vehicle Bio: CB-79 Mustang

A large Combat Search and Rescue Chopper, it is modeled after the CH-53 PAVE LOW (for visual purposes). It has a spacious cargo bay for holding troops and supplies. (Probably 20 soldiers if everyone gets cosy, 30 civilians). Well armored, it only has two door mounted miniguns for infantry suppression, and relies on stealth and gunship support to do its job effectively.

Appearance: Constantin stands around 5’10”, allowing him to sit more comfortably within the cramped confines of his helicopter’s cockpit. He has ruddy red-brown hair, which he keeps cut short to fit easily within his helmet. He has a horrific looking car along the right side of his neck from when a piece of exploding shrapnel nearly decapitated him. As a result he now wears a heavy flak jacket with a high collar in an attempt to protect himself. He bears an athletic and military build, typical of those involved in CSAR operations. He has brown eyes that seem to crinkle from stress and worry more often than from a smile. Constantin tries to put on a brave face for the most part, and comes off as affable most of the time, his eyes belie the cynicism he feels within.

Current Situation: Constantin is a Leftenant in the AFFC, currently serving in the 122nd CSAR wing, 2nd Battalion, 25th Arcturan Guards. He is the current leader of King Flight, which consists of two CB-79 Mustangs, and two H-7 Warrior attack helicopters. For the time being they are operating in and around the capital of New Cartris, supporting the 25th Guard’s efforts against Clan Wolf.

History: Born to refugees from Tikonov, Constantin was actually born on a dropship while traveling toward the Lyran Commonwealth. The youngest of three siblings, Constantin developed a close relationship with his father, and would often assist him at his work – helping to repair VTOL engines and parts at a local airstrip. Constantin became enamored with flight, and began pilot training as soon as he was able. Not long before his 18th birthday, he and his father got into a rather violent altercation, and on his 18th birthday he walked into a recruiters office. Since that time, Constantin has bounced around to a number of different combat units, eventually settling with the 25th as a result of the clan invasion.

Guys, I just want to put out a quick reminder that the characters are supposed to be low on resources and trying to figure out creative ways of getting past the Clans - not to be accompanied by two lances of 'Mechs and bringing an entire dropship with them.

Also, if you could clean up your posts before putting them up that would be much appreciated! The formatting is making my head hurt for some of the posts. :)

Don't worry. That gets smoothed over in the next post. Considering the manner of its touchdown, Wombat Company may have slightly less than survived.

Dirk's bio updated to include his marriage and daughter. Sparks and I were still hammering out the details on that one when I first posted.
So my character is married to, and has a child with, one of the GM's characters.
This should be entertaining.
Now to work on Dirk's entrance!

I'm really digging the cast for this RP, and it's always good to see a member of the Tombstone Barbershop Quartet. I'm looking forward to reading this RP and seeing how it unfolds.

If you like seeing a member of the TBQ around, wait until you get to join the afterparty :D
We literally can't do it without you - and Nikolai.

Hmmm... I must be honest and admit that I haven't been keeping up with the antics of the Quartet, stupid lack of internet and all. During the little amount of time I had on here I was checking my own RPs. But I'd love to join this RP, it's brought together the most interesting of people. But alas, it's Sparky's Barbeque and I need to go through the proper channels and see if he's willing to let my flakey a$$ join.
