What are good engines for Hunchbacks? I have only run the STD 200, tried an XL once but people kept blowing my RT and the engine out so I stayed away from XLs.

I run an STD250 in all of my Hunchbacks. In fact I've started using the STD250s in almost everything that's not an assault as my starting point. From there I'll change the engine around as the build develops.

With the STD250 you have the required, minimum number of heatsinks all inside of the engine so you save on crit space you you use a lot of internal upgrades. Another plus is that all of those heatsinks operate at 2.0 efficiency when you use double heatsinks (or so I have heard).

The Std200, 225 and 250 are the best picks. Below 200 you are too slow to be useful as a medium. Above 250 I don't find the extra speed matters that much. I'd only pick it if there was nothing else to spend weight on.

Because engines get an extra internal heatsink up to a max of 10 for every 25 in engine rating you want to stick to multiples of 25. Heat efficiency is also better for internal heatsinks once you have double heatsinks.

This is a fun 4G build using a STD250 as recommended above. It perfectly achieves constant firing too. HBK-4G

hbk-4g
std 250
dhs
ff armor
endo-steel structure
ac20/MG/MG (right torso)
ML (head)
ML right arm
ML left arm

it's a monster.
in close ill be constantly firing MGs, MLs, and AC20s. scares people off quick. far away ill just shoot ac20s. and medium range ac20s + MLs

only problem is i can only take 14 rounds of ac20 with me.

I think if you drop the head ML, you can add an extra ton of ammo.

I would drop the 2 mg + ammo. So you can put 2 more tons of ac20 ammo in there B)

I have tryed the HBK SP with 4 Large Lasers, Std 200, 14DHS, Endo. Well its way to hot and not very practical. In the end you only can shoot 1 or 2 LL.

But i came up with this:
HBK SP:
STD 200
2 LL (arms)
2 SRM6, 2t ammo (legs)
1 ML (head)
15 DHS

It runs quite cool. The 5 ML, 2 SRM6 may have a higher alpha but i dont like the short range. So its more balanced and you are not useless at long range.
Its also possible to take of one HS and the ML and put 2 ML in the arms. But they are backup annyway and if one arm blows up you are stuck with 1 LL 1 ML eigther.

Can anyone give me advice on my 4sp build? It's my first mech and I'm not doing so well.

that's a classic build, the only suggestion if you aren't doing to well is,
play it more get the practice in and, you will improve,
don't be a front line man wait for others to engage, then back them up,
let your heavy or assaults take the focus fire while
you drop damage onto the enemy from the sides or pos rear.

I concur. At 50 tons you carry a good punch but you can't take a beating like a heavy or an assault. In my experience driving HBKs you will do your best when you can "hit without being seen." Once you become the center of attention you'll be stripped and cored before you can blink. That isn't to say an HBK cannot solo mechs heavier than it but you can't take on another lance and expect to live long. Hang with the big mechs and make sure that when they engage the fight isn't fair. I think Mediums work best at tipping the odds in favor of your heavies and assaults.

Try this build instead: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...8bb9f33c62f8764

No AMS, since LRM's are a joke at the moment.

Upgrade the engine to a max 260, since speed kills.

Upgrade the SRM's to Artemis IV

More Armor.

4SP
Endo
DHS
Standard 220 engine
Large laser- left arm
3 medium lasers- head and right arm
2 SRM6- two tons ammo

Good all-around fighter, goes 78 with tweak, enough firepower to bring down anything.

I tried many variants for my 4SP and i feel more comfortable in a faster engine. The Std 200 is a little bit to slow, a 250 let you take cover much more easier. Also the 10 internal HS frees up some critical slots.
I wanted to add some Large Lasers to make full use of the 4 arm lasers and this works great for me: HBK-4SP, Std 250, Endo, FF, 16 DHS, 4 ML, 1 LL, 2 SSRM2 (1 ton)

2 Large Lasers will make you pretty slow (HBK-4SP) or run to hot (HBK-4SP) or have not enough backup weapons (HBK-4SP). The SSRMs are very useful, there seem to be less ecm around.

I really like this build, as it fulfils a wide range of rolls. A 5 ML build is also a good choice, but it didn't feel very unique to me.

Oh i just saw Lard Ikka has also a single LL in his 4 SP :)
Great minds think alike, but fools seldom differ. I guess ^^

I run this one.

HBK-4SP

Very light on leg armour so you have to try and avoid the high ground on hilly maps.

I keep the head laser on button 3 as back up and only use it after I've lost one of the other weapon systems. Hunchbacks end up zombied a LOT and that medium pulse laser has saved my neck many many times.
