With a map large enough to finally let LRM's come back into their own, is it perhaps time to buff the venerable missile launcher with Swarm and Thunder munitions.

For those not into canon, "Swarm" munitions are LRMs that launch a cloud of submunition projectiles as they come into attack range. The munitions, if they do not achieve a lock on the intended target, will proceed on to attack adjacent targets (swarming), with targeting odds getting worse with distance from the original target.

This does NOT overcome ECM, but a non-ECM mech might not want to be standing too close to that Raven or D-DC.

"Thunder" munitions are a missile-delivered minefield, up to 20 pts in damage, that can be laid to block or channel the advance of opponents. Attack damage is to the legs, unless you manage to fall on them.

Only way thunder muntions would be usefull is if as an LRM boat, I can deliver them to a specific grid on the map. All you can do right now is say...eh...over there somewhere.

Dude fascam minefields? Yes please. Need to have horrible tonnage or slots so it can't be abused or boated and a self destruct timer so it only lasts 30 secs or so.

TAG.

Not to mention the entertainment value of seeing a Star of Elementals being chased all over the map by a couple of LRM 20 swarms...

While I, personally, want to see alternate munitions be made available (and Ask the Devs 17 confirmed that there are plans for alternate munitions B)), I imagine that it would be a bit before we see Thunder and Swarm missiles, specifically - they're not recovered by the IS until 3052 and 3053, respectively (according to page 231 of TechManual).
(Also of note is that "normal" Swarm LRMs do not discriminate between allies and enemies; this is the key distinguishing characteristic between the "normal" Swarm LRMs reintroduced in 3053 and the Swarm-I LRMs introduced in 3057.)

Oddly (and rather hypocritically ^_^), the Clans had retained both missile types from the Star League era and made substantial use of both during the Invasion. So much for "Clan honor", eh?

According to PGI's timeline, we're in at least 3050/51 now...

Swarm? Hell my own team regularly pelt each other with LRMs because most people either A) face hump each other or  hide out of sight lobbing LRMs at each other.

Today I actually had an Atlas attempt to face hump my CIcada before he attempted to use his Gauss...

gauss rifle is supposed to be known for it's extreme range. he might be better off with an AC20.
