One of the most frustrating aspects of the AMS is that the majority of its time is spent wasting ammunition on missiles that simply have no chance of hitting anything but the ground. I will burn through so much ammunition shooting down missiles that are already dead on arrival.

If AMS was amazing, I might overlook this. But even under ideal circumstances, it's at best a minor damage reducer.

Add an On/Off Switch for AMS

This would allow a player to actively manage his AMS ammunition instead of pointlessly hurling it at anything that comes within his vicinity. Alternatively, you could make it similar to the override feature where it only goes off temporarily (5 seconds sounds good).

This addition would not impact new players because AMS will work for them just like before. Instead, it will provide an incentive to carry the AMS for veterans who understand the use of cover.

Another reason to add on/off functionality to AMS is that it can give away your position when an enemy fires LRMs overhead.

Yes. Also easy to implement - let it be selected like any weapon in the weapon selection window, and activated/deactivated with ctrl just like any other weapon.
