Another topic got me thinking about this, and I kind of feel that the model for SSRMs and LRMs in this game is not right. Both are advanced missiles capable of efficient tracking and fast change of direction. This is also one of the reasons they are hated and why the SSRMs feel overpowered.

The tabletop game implies that the missile weapons, except for Arrow IV and Thunderbolt, are quantity over quality weapons where a large amount of very light and inexpensive missiles are launched and hoped to hit. It also implies that SSRMs do not track at all, but that the launcher makes the shooting decision.

For that matter, wouldn't the right way to fix SSRMs be to have them auto-account for target speed and bearing, but not have them change course in-flight. Ie. that the launcher would have auto-aim, but the salvo could still be dodged? This could also mean, that SSRMs could be fired at any time, but would auto-aim when you had a lock.

In the same vein, wouldn't it be better if LRMs only tracked somewhat poorly and constantly accelerated towards their target. This way your aim would matter, especially against faster mechs, and also LRMs would be skill weapons capable of being dodged. The lesser tracking capability would would also mimic the TT mechanic about the missiles having no exact minimum range, even if it is much harder to hit with them up close.

In more detail, the best option would of course be a MW2-esque LRM system, where, after the weapon is locked, one can choose the launch vector and thus manually rain down indirect fire and/or shoot around corners etc. This made the weapon pretty cool in that game.

Opinions?

I liked it how it was possible to dodge a flight of LRMs in MW3.
You have seen it comming and instead of turn and run...you could rush towards the missiles...so that they need a larger turn angle to hit you...but they were not possible to do this.

I hardly can remember MW2...but i know that they could cause more damage as any weapon system when used right. However they were no dumb fire and forget as in MW4
