Has anything to that effect been mentioned by the devs as still being WIP, or is that how it'll be, with every custom-modified mech just appearing the same as the rest?

And in the video, they only change the AC 20 for an AC 10, which is not that big of a change.
Here's hoping that there will be changes!
Besides, this topic has already been made: http://mwomercs.com/...agrams-for-mwo/

Can we even put missiles there?

Maybe not, but the Swayback has to have a way to pack lasers in there, doesn't it?
Besides, that's irrelevant. Point is, static external mech visuals = 2002 design. It's 2012, this is just inexcusable.

Look at the Dragon's cannon arm in both pictures, they are clearly different.

The only visual differences are the stock mech differences (Catapult K-2 has the cannons instead of ears).
The first Dragon is a DRG-5N. The second is maybe the stock DRG-1N.

How is it irrelevant? If you can't put a missile rack in the place of the AC then how/why would it should It show a missile rack there? It doesn't make any sense.
There are several examples of changed weapon appearance in screenshots and videos. I am pretty sure it has been covered in q and a as well.
The inexcusable thing is not doing any research prior to slamming the game for no reason.
Forgot to mention, thanks for the pic. The weapons look great. I'm so excited to play. Not long now.

Stop being stupid. In the same video he sticks more lasers in the arms as well. I didn't see any extra lasers sprout up, did you? He also has two guns firing out of a single barrel, the AC/5 and the machine gun, which is just dumb.
As I said, the only visual differences are the hard-modeled STOCK VARIANTS. This is also shown in the Mechlab, where the HBK-4G and HBK-4P are two different mechs with two different models.
I'm sure you have a convenient excuse to defend the developers as to why a medium and a small laser visually should look the same as a single medium laser.

Three things to notice:
1) MG strongly reminds me of Apache' M230 autocannon.
2) Since the UAC has a double rate of fire of the regular AC - why didn't they make the UAC/5 just a twin-barreled version of the regular AC/5? Just like the real twin-barreled autocannons with the doubled rate of fire - GSh-30-2 or GSh-23-2.
3) The sweetest flamer was the bottom-left in the previous concept art.
