We all love giant robots and the bigger they are and the more guns they have, the better. After seeing a topic asking about the walking dreadnoguhts that are the colossal weight class, I think it'd be a great idea to include these lumbering behemoths in a game mode.

My proposal is thus:
  • 24 players total evenly divided into two teams
  • One team is the attacking a fortified base, and the other team is trying to defend.
  • The attacking team nominates a player to drive a colossal weight siege mech.
    • Said mech is an:
    • Said selection is done by one of the following methods:
      • Lottery
      • Vote
  • The defenders are trying to either destroy the colossal mech, or keep it from breaching their fortifications for ten minutes.
    • Ten minutes is six hundred or so turns on the tabletop, in case you were wondering.
  • The matchup between team advantages would break down like this:
    • Attacker:
      • Massive, yet slow killing machine
      • onboard artiliery from the colossal mech
      • checkpoint-based spawn locations
        • Yes, respawning
        • When you 'respawn' you select one of your four readied mechs to drop with
        • If the idea of "infinate respawns" seems repugnant, opt for a ticket-based system instead
      • Activities to speed the assault
        • deploy bridges, blast holes in walls, lower gates, etc.
    • Defender
      • Fortifications
        • Static turrets/minefields
          • Possibly placeable/controlable by the team captain
      • "activities" to slow down/damage the colossal mech
        • keep bridges from being lowered, EMP lasers, etc.
        • Said activities are contestable by the attackers, providing areas of strategic and tactical conflict
      • Slightly faster respawn timer than the attackers
    • Neutral
      • Capturable, limited use mechbays to repair/reload
        • extremely limited uses, perhaps two or three at most
        • never a full repair/reload
Comments are appreciated, critcism warmly welcomed, and outrage totally shunned. What say ye?

Edit: After searching the forums around, I noticed I'm not the first person to think this up, but I still think it's an awesome game mode idea. And the most recent thread that was similar was eaten alive by grognards crying about their sacred weight classes and ruining battletech and

Yes. More gamemodes. Very yes.

Although ******* this would take months to work in.

I'd love for some asymmetric modes to be implemented, but giving one person a super heavy mech just seems kind of unfair. Wouldn't everyone want to have a go at it?

Anyways, it has the same problem that the escort mode in Team Fortress had which lead to TF2 not including it: the entire game revolves around the skill of one player. If your colossal mech doesn't have a good pilot or a pilot that wants to troll your team your defeat would become more or less inevitable regardless of the actions of the rest of the team.

Most definitely, Siege Mechs are for me. The one that I really want to get my hands on is the Omega.

Yeah, those were definate concerns I had thinking about this mode, but they're problems I can't see an easy solution to. Perhaps having a "GIANT KILLER ROBOT" version and an "ESCORT" version of the same mission/map, or only using the mode in 12-man team queue?

For clarity, the "GIANT KILLER ROBOT" version is closer to the Escort gametype from TF, and "Escort" is closer to Payload from TF2, but with the bomb cart having commander-controllable arty on it.

Omega has what? 3x Gauss and 2LB10-X? And goes 32 km/h.

And did I mention a turnrate with which Stalker looks like a hard mech to get behind and stay there.

You can't get more obsolete. Couple that with the fact it's not canon to have it right now and...

In general a good idea....
but kill the super heavy for the attackers
reduce number of defenders for more attackers

fortified position...hm...hell cut the defenders to 4 vs 12. They have the better position....although nothing defend a position as good as a couple of diged in tanks (Shrecks or Allacorn IV)

A lot of resources needed to implement this, but I personally feel it would totally worth it. This is the sort of thing that could keep this game interesting and fun to play.

hmm no on it being a mech people could use normally, but on its own special map balanced around killing one of these advanced prototype monsters id say yes.

In the past ive advocated for escourt the industrial mechs as a game mode as well.

More unique game modes always +1

I like the sound of this a lot actually. Asymmetrical game modes are by far the most fun.

I don't think voting would be a good way to see who gets the Super heavy though..

Possibly true; but just think of those Gauss rifles being used in a Sniper role and hitting a Stalker, Atlas or anything in the assault category in the same place and at the same time. There is a distinct possibility that you could core an assault with one Alpha Strike! This is the Snipers dream and the code by which we work.

I like this idea, and have pondered it. And easily defensible position, like a plateau with high slopes. Only one or two positions upon which to fire down onto the top. Lots of cover on top. Make it high enough that only the lights can jump onto it to harry the defenders. Leave only one road entrance available to enter the plateau on foot but, as said, easily defensible...like they have to come up single file and there's a lot crossfire potential.

Leave the count at 12 attackers, 6 defenders.

This would be a nice titan class mech. Smaller mechs can ride on it and be extra turrets while the titan moves closer to the defender base.

The game ends when the base core is destroyed or the titan is destroyed.

Or time runs out and no one wins.
