I will be once again be creating a builds of the week thread, however I will focus on more price points than before. These builds are targeted for MWO and top-of-the-line games, with general computing as a secondary target. All builds are based off Newegg pricing for the USA. Feel free to ask for advice for other locations should you need help. Onwards with the guide!

Vulps, Might I suggest a bit more Uber machine that rests (well) above $2k. To me the case is subjective to personal tastes, but switch out some core components with a bit more horse power, and remaining items are just minutia.

CPU:
Intel I7-3690X Sandy Bridge E 3.3GHZ/3.9 Turbo $1069.99
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819116491

Mother Board:
Asus Rampage IV Extreme LGA 2011 X79 Chipset $429.00
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813131802

RAM:
2x (64GB total) Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB (4x 8GB) DDR3 2400 $999.99
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820233394

Power Supply:
PC Power & Cooling Silencer MkIII 1200W $229
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817703037

SSD:
Samsung 840 Pro 512GB $519.00
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820147194

GPU:
2x EVGA 06G-P4-2793-KR GTX TITAN Superclock 6GB GDDR5 $2138.00
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130898

Alternate GPU:
EVGA GTX 690 04G-P4-2690-KR $1019.00
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130781

Those swap outs total: $4959.28 with the Titans

If I was building a dedicated gaming rig, for myself, then those would be my choices for core components. In fact I have several workstations very similar to this at my firm, we position them where higher horse power isn't needed, but they make great gaming machines.

In future BOTW threads I may include an extreme version, but that doesn't change as often as the other components. Or maybe later tonight if i find the time.

Your $650 (because you aren't including os) is slower than my $600 botw for modern games.
So is your $1100 against my $1000/1200. Your $1300 would do so very much better with an FX chip rather than an APU as the CPU. Your $1600 is again, slower than my $1500 build. Your extreme build wastes money vs my just as fast 5k build. Your builds focus a lot on the extra components rather than pushing for gaming capability, and many have far more RAM than is optimal. The only reason at this time 8GB is recommended is that it's general future proofing, systems are still doing fine on 4GB and more is not necessary, at least not yet for most applications. And not for gaming until a year or two after the next-gen consoles come out. As such I can't really say I could recommend your builds.

And I've been doing this for a while, I've just recently gotten back into posting them. Took me about 2, 2 and a half hours for all of this? Really too bad I can't get paid for it all X3 but i help others as I can, and this cuts back on unnecessary threads for the most part. Now if only I could afford even the cheapest of these rigs that would be great, sadly even half decent jobs are hard to get these days. Keep in mind the job economy, most people are looking at value for the overall build, and extra odds and ends being splurged on when the core system could be improved is a detracting proposal in many cases.

One last bit, I recommend against your recommendation for Windows 8, especially with a SSD equipped desktop. Performance gains are under 1% and the GUI is not suitable for workstation use, nor is it that friendly to many gamers. Also some older (older older) programs have more compatibility issues with 8 than with 7, which is a hit against it for some of the retro gamers you would find here on the MWO site in particular.

looks like i do need to learn from you

is building system been a hobby for a long time?

i use to play with AMD builds when AMD had the Athlon ThunderBird and XP range of CPUs which were bang for your buck

but hate to say this but AMD seems to be really the last resort when money is tight, this is the case for many gamers in the asian region especially Singaporean players who really hate lag and will complain even the slightest drop in frames

ppl here are just spending money on Intel based on the number of builds which i made for my customers
it more of a case of shut up and take my money and i want this and that till i point i kinda got used to their habits of using extreme parts which are ex and maybe useless

so yea pardon me if my build do come out expensive but as mention in my own tread

i will do a update and renew of all the builds every 3 to 6 months based on the release of the new parts like CPU and GPU department

do like to hear your view from your area

thanks for your advise

That's a fairly valid point, different regions have different purchasing habits.

Hi Vulps
A few of suggestions:
  • Can you link to the basket rather than a bunch of links? Makes it easier to comprehend.
  • I've not managed to go through all the builds yet but I assume they're all aimed at desktop gaming. I'd be interested in seeing your thoughts on more portable mATX and ITX based hardware. This is for those with smaller rooms, living rooms and LAN gamers like myself.
  • Rather than specific price points I'd be tempted to consider a specific target. E.g. what's the minimum for 1920x1080 gaming at max settings or the minimum for running MWO? Right now budget 2560x1440 gaming would be a great target for many wanting to save for the next best thing.
It's great to see you and others putting the time and effort into helping non-techies build their ultimate gaming machine ;)

These builds all meet the minimum requirements for running MWO, and unfortunately due to it's poor coding you will not see any system currently at this time of posting, hit 60+fps at max settings without a highly overclocked i7. Aside from this, for my builds you will generally see the builds from $700 on up be able to play at 1080p comfortably, and $800 on up at max settings. (albeit below 60fps.) My $1000 builds and above should be capable of playing MWO at 1440p. I go by price as that is what people generally look for, they have a price in mind and hence they want the best they can get for their dollar.

For different form factors, I can give individuals builds for those categories on demand. However they are a nice product and offer less value in price/performance, which is what I focus on.

As for a basket, I could take a screenshot, but this would add time to working on these builds, and if you're on a PC, it should be quite simple just to open all the parts for a given build in new tabs and look over all the parts that way, so I'm not sure how that would really add any value to the post.

Also, updated on 4/28/2013

Unless you own a Titan, which produces 60fps+ even whilst recording with a 2500k

S!

Good thread. To game does not necessarily need a big budget, just clever investments ;) I built a A10-5800K build with 4Gb RAM and a 560GTX 2Gb to a friend on a budget. He is a happy camper now being able to play his games on enjoyable settings.

DV,

I'm currently running a trio of titans, 1 to each of 3 30" monitors at 2560x1600 (7680x4800). I've found that I'm keeping 90+ FPS (+- 10) on each one.

I'm currently running a trio of titans, 1 to each of 3 30" monitors at 2560x1600 (7680x4800). I've found that I'm keeping 90+ FPS (+- 10) on each one.

Yep certainly easy enough, i have mine locked in the EVGA Precision X to supply 60FPS i can't tell the difference above that and it holds at 60 while i record games, which is all im after!

Keep in mind, you two, that MWO is still far more dependent on the CPU than GPU (barring absurd resolutions ). MWO has no problem running at 60fps, even on high settings, on single mid-high end GPUs; hell a 5870 is almost enough. This is partly because the game uses no traditional anti-aliasing, and post-AA barely touches the GPU.

What bogs it down is the CPU. I've found that my copy of the game -because we all know performance is hardly consistent- requires my 3570k to run at just about 4ghz even (vs 3.4 turbo) to run at 60fps all the time, and generally at the 4.2 I keep it at, it'll run between 70 and 90, though it still drops down close to 60 occasionally.

Thank you, Vulpes, for your great work! Just wondering if you going to update those configs soon? I tried to order a new system for myself and found that some parts are out of stock...

I'll send you a PM for a custom pricing build. As it stands, I do not have much free time and won't have another day of till Sunday, so expect then at the earliest for an update, as a full update to this thread takes 2-3 hours in total, and coming home from work i tend not to be up to updating.

vulpesveritas,

Could you do a build based around a mini or micro atx form factor. Been thinking of going that directions for simplicity as i only have a single optical drive and don't really plan to SLI/crossfire
