Ok, so here are mhy thought:

1. Make real quirks that accurately reflect the mech type
2. Attempt to use these quirks as a means to reign in unfavorable cheese builds

Example 1. The catapult - splatcat

From sarna:

The Catapult is an offense oriented, second-line fire-support BattleMech initially produced on a limited contract for the Terran Hegemony. Its ten tons of armor, fifteen heat sinks and top speed of 64.8 km/h allows the Catapult to deliver its payload of Long Range Missiles on an enemy from great distances without the risk of return fire.

Suggested quirk - 10% Increased damage from LRMS, 10% reduced damage from SRM: Puts the Catapult more in lines intended line of work... ..as a long range fire support!

Example 2 - The gausscat

Fitting that gear in the torso would be a bit of work for a Cat so..

Suggested quirk - Reduced torso twist for K2 ONLY WHEN large ballistics such as gauss/AC20 are equiped in the body

While this may infuriate people who run the cheesebuilds, the quirks do not affect the overall performance of the mech for its intended purpose, but places it more in a niche and reduces effectiveness of cheesebuilds.

Poptarts - Reduced lift when mounting large ballistics, increased lift when mounting lighter AC5's/AC2's etc.

Thoughts?
