Mechassault and MechWarrior Online are both based on the same IP - Battletech. However, this is a different and better game. :P

MechWarrior 2 had elementals too, if you knew the code. As for where things stand in relation to each other:

Battletech is the original tabletop game and universe. It includes rulebooks, miniatures, maps, sourcebooks and novels. There are several variations and editions.

MechWarrior is a series of cockpit simulation games taking place in the Battletech universe (PC)

MechCommander is a series of real time strategy games taking place in the Battletech universe (PC)

MechAssault is a series of arcade shooter games taking place in the Battletech universe (XBox and Nintendo DS)

Mechwarrior Tactics is a new game that doesn't fit with any of the existing series - it is in many ways a browser based reimagining of the tabletop game.

There are a few other games in the Battletech universe. For example there is another game called MechWarrior which is a pen and paper RPG (not a battle sim). There where also a handful of unconnected computer and console games prior to Mechwarrior 1 under the Battletech name, though those games didn't have the level of technology yet to provide the feeling of piloting a mech (the graphics could have been switched for aliens or zombies and you wouldn't tell the difference).

IS THIS GAME RELATED TO MECHASSAULT?

Mechwarrior, MechCommander, MechAssault, and Battletech are all based on the same lore. MechAssault is technically a microsoft butchered attempt at getting kids who love Armored Core / Gundam style gameplay into Mechwarrior. Unfortunately the MA series quite literally killed the franchise for many years. When PGI first tried making a single player game, Microsoft (who owned the franchise then) decided that "we want it to be in third person. It needs to be fast paced, mechs need to be able to jump. Needs to work great with Halo-style controls. It's got to be for our Xbox 360." And what happened was it was essentially turned from this concept:

to this:

And the project was completely abandoned. A couple of years later PGI took a look at what they had, got the original creator of Battletech to get the rights back from microsoft (most of them) and allow PGI to recreate it in their own way, and through various proposals by the Mechwarrior franchise fan-base, was literally pushed into doing a free to play version. MWO was born.

What we have now are these: (I would be the Atlas the camera is focused on.) Skip 1 minute and 20 seconds in.

Strategic 8-versus-8 Battle of Minds.

Endurance brawls.

Individual tactics.

High speed chases.

Awesome Flamers

Yeesh. The only footage I had seen of MechAssault before was a Mad Cat running around shooting stuff with PPCs. To which I had thought "okay, it's arcadey but still BattleTech". That video you linked up there? How is that even related to the lore at all. xD Magical fireballs! Beams of light that come from the ground! ...hacking? Eye beams? What. And goodness, that music. xD

Now I see why some folks dislike the MechAssault games.

Never played the second game, but first MechAssault was good fun. It wasn't Mechwarrior, but it never pretended to be the next Mechwarrior game.

MechAssault 1 wasn't actually all that out there. It wasn't MechWarrior but it was still mostly in keeping with the feel of the lore. Not a bad game at all. Just not what most people around here wanted.

The second one really went insane though. No arguing there.

Good summary. One small addition:
MegaMek is an "unofficial, online version of the battletech board game." It is a great way to run CBT without spending all day playing with dice.

MechAssult had no mechlab which is such a huge difference from the MechWarrior series.
