Since everyone always says don't cry, suggest something. Well here we go. 50% is your max heat dissipated. or your green zone. once you go beyond that these things happen. As per the heat chart from Battletech. this can be tweaked but here is it's raw form:
at 63% you lose 11 kph in speed
at 70% you get light static on your screen making it harder to fire
at 75% you lose 22 kph speed
at 82% you get medium static
at 85% you have a 33% chance of shut down even with override
at 87% you lose 33 kph speed
at 92% you get heavy static
at 95% you have a 50% chance of shut down even if you override
at 98% you have a 33% chance of an ammo explosion
at 100% you lose 44 kph speed
at 105% you have a 66% chance of shutdown even with override
at 107% you have a 50% chance of an ammo explosion
at 110% you have extreme static
at 112% you lose 55 kph speed
at 115% you have a 80% chance to shutdown even with override
at 125% you have a 66% chance to have an ammo explosion
at 125% you shut down, no override possible
The scale as you cool would reverse. I.E. if you are at 112% heat you have a -55kph move until you drop to 100% heat then you would gain 11 kph. But still have a 44 kph penalty to move. I believe that would stop a lot of alpha boating and make heat management a larger part of the game.

If I run an Atlas with a 300 engine, do I go in reverse at 112% heat?

Any penalty above 100% is pointless as your mech is either shut down or taking damage from the excess heat.

like I said, raw form. 100% heat load is basically double your heat dissipation. 125% is pushing over that limit even further. and no, hotthedd, your atlas just wouldn't be able to move if you suffer more heat-speed penalty than you have movement speed. so if you can dissipate 20 heat and you heat burden is at 125% of that you would be at about 23 heat above your heat dissipation capacity. after 125% heat you shut down no matter what. And the percentages are just a way of showing heat burden. So if your weapon or ammo explodes before you lose armor in that section because of overheat, it is a bug. Why?
