Catapult K2

I realy love the PPC's to hit targets at a range.
I barely use my lasers due to heat with PPC's and the Machineguns are only used if a target comes head on.
I am looking for a build thats ranged to support my team.

It's basically the stock loadout, but improved everywhere. ML's up to LL's, DHS, large, fast engine, ERPPC's for longer range and close in punch.
It's pretty expensive, though. I'd work up to it, get Double Heat Sinks first, if you don't have them already. This is pretty much always the most important upgrade on any mech. Then save up for the lasers and engines, and go to erppc's last (regular PPC's do the same damage over most ranges anyways, and generate less heat).

2ppc 2uac5 is a fun build you could try.

That's almost identical to what I was planning (just with an AMS and no machine guns). Glad to see you like it.
I currently have 2 ERLL in the arms, (for taking potshots over hills) + 2 LL with an STD 300 engine, and I like that very much.

Lately I've been using 2x ac/10 and 4 medium lasers.

You can actually drop endo-steel and some armor to fit in another DHS. If you wanted to save some money.
With the left over tonnage you could upgrade to a standard 280 if you wanted or just leave it as is to save money.

A bit slow.. but once the enemy is in range, the punishment is immense (or if you want to snipe, this works too). As he said, the Arm-mounted ER-PPCs really LOOK like big guns.

I took a long break and convinced a buddy of mine to start the game with me (again)
He wanted to play a catapult so i told him to buy a K2 (because missile balance is a roller coaster and you never know if your missile boat will be 100% useless in 2 days).
What i designed for him is this:

I'm just not sure if it will run too hot for him (since he is a new player he will probably panic when he is caught by suprise and will miss quite a few shots)

Yup, that's the build I'm using too.
XL engines are a must for this mech, you save a lot.
Also, congratulations for buying a great starter mech! No doubt it will bring you multitudes of epic battles!

It's hard to say if something will be too hot for someone as it comes down to personal preference and how often they use their high heat weapons. As long as he knows to watch his heat (And not to use his PPCs under 90 meters) he should be okay. I'd grab the two heat related skills first and either put each PPC in their own weapon group or use chain fire. May also want to tell him to refrain from alpha striking as that would be 25/30 heat (without skills).
Any reason for the xl 285? Dropping to a xl270 lets you slot an additional heat sink, or dropping to a xl265 gives you the same plus half a ton to add a little more armor. Guess it depends on how much speed vs heat efficiency he wants.
My largest concern is how expensive the mech is going to be. According to Smurfy it's 12.7 cbills, which could be a lot to a new player. (Though once he finishes his cadet bonus I think he should be alright.) He's going to have to gradually upgrade his mech which could impact his play experience. DHS should be the first upgrade and endo-steel after that. While he's saving for the XL he could use a standard engine build like the one I posted.

First of all, he likes being fast. He can't stand walking too slow.
I did play around with lower engine rates but the 270 would give me 10 true double engine heatsinks +2 outside heatsinks, while the 285 gives 11 true double heatsinks. The difference between 1 engine DHS and 2 outside DHS is 0.8/0.08 (if i'm not mistaken) which means less than a single heatsink.
I didn't feel like it is worth the lost speed

It runs quite hot so it takes a bit getting use to but it packs quite a punch and it can take a punch if you shield with the side that does not house the gauss.
the XL 300 is also quite usefull as it lets you go 82 kph and with a 45 dmg alpha it is the most fun mech i've had the pleasure of playing with

I first started off by switching to Double Heat Sinks and Endo-Steel and which gave me enough tonnage for this build: CPLT-K2.
I switched to other variants & mechs for a while but eventually got an XL300 engine for it which frees up four tons. I used that for 2 extra DHS (so I could fire the lasers more often), 1 more ton of uAC ammo (since I occasionally did run out) and an extra ton of armour (which is max save for 3 points of armour on each leg).

4xPPC
16-17 DHS I think.
