Hi everyone,

I'm currently playing on a weaker machine (Core2 Quad 2,33 Ghz, AMD HD5770, 4GB Ram) than I've got at home, so I had to do some tweaking to get mostly playable 30-50 FPS not only in testing grounds, but also in the actual game. But I discovered that none of the custom detail tweaks have as high an impact on +fps as has pressing the tab-key, which fades out the hud and displays scoreboard. Likewise, when my Mech goes down in the heat of the battle, there is a noticeable increase in fps as soon as the hud is switched off as the camera is swapped to exterior view of the Mech collapsing - even if there still might be lots of gpu-fx like incoming lasers, lrms and stuff around.
So I monitored CPU-load, because I had the feeling this might be a bottleneck; however CPU load is pretty much around 45-50% all the time, no matter hud or no hud. Similar goes for the gpu-load. So I was wondering, is computing the mwo hud really that complex that it brings your fps down 15-20 frames at times, or do I have a software-realted issue here? Did anyone else experience similar differences in performance w/o hud? I'm curious...

Best,
Alex

i have the same thing as well. i believe it has been quite well-known for some time already.

personally i don't quite understand how the HUD elements would have such a massive impact on performance. i would have thought that rendering mechs and lasers would be tougher..

Same for me. I also observed that the fps boost persist once you are dead and watch a buddy through his hud. So it's not the hud itself that steps on brakes. Maybe it's something into the net code doing the calculation for updates and communicating with the server, what isn't done at your machine if you just watch a copy of the hud elements through the eyes of your lancemates. I still feel a further inquiry might reveal some performance bonusses for that matter.

It's a known issue, for some odd reason the HUD eats up a lot of processing power. So far they recognize that it is a problem but have not said when, or if it will be fixed.
