FAST MECHS
This includes lights and the Cicada. Scouting is very important. At the beginning of the match, go ahead of your team and try to locate the enemy. Relay the information to your team, with as much detail as you have time to give. Important information includes the location of enemy mechs, the direction they're travelling, the number of mechs in that location, and the type of mechs.
Spotting. As the battle lines move together, try to keep your eyes on the enemy from a safe location. This allows your indirect fire support to put pressure on the enemy, as well as allowing your team to get to a good position to counter the enemy's movements. Do not engage the enemy at this stage, as they will quickly overpower you (because you have no support).
Disruption. Once the battle lines meet, try to get the enemy mechs to turn away from your team. You can do this by getting behind them and poking them with your weapons. You should not get into a fight however, because once again, they will overpower you. Instead attempt to draw as many of the enemy guns away from your team as possible, and use your speed and cover to evade damage.
If your team gets into a brawl with the enemy, this is when you can move in close. Try to get behind the heavy mechs and hit them in the back center torso.
Lights are also good at killing long range missile boats if they are on their own. Even if you don't kill them, stopping them from firing their missiles at your team will effectively neutralize them.
BRAWLING MECHS
These mechs are close range specialists, normally with decent speed. You won't be able to trade effectively with the heavy mechs on the enemy team, so try not to be in front of them. While the big heavy mechs move slowly forward and hold the battle line, you should be trying to flank. Get up close to their team and force them to fight you, letting your slower, longer range mechs aid you with their heavy, long range weapons.
Similar to the light, your role is not necessarily to kill, but merely to sow chaos among the enemy lines. Don't stand in front assault mechs

LONG RANGE MECHS
Your role is to support the brawling mechs, put pressure on the enemy lines, and to trade damage with the enemy. Positioning is very important - make sure your have good lines of sight and good cover you can easily hide behind. Ideally be in locations with somewhere to retreat to should the enemy approach.
UPDATE - Using LRMs: I'm not super experienced with LRMs but here are some things.
Long range missiles are a good way to damage your enemies without taking return fire, or from extreme range. Hitting with them is not as simple as pushing fire however. Make sure you have a lock on your enemy before firing otherwise your missiles will be duds. You also must keep a lock on your target by keeping your arms (the circle) pointed at your target. If you lose lock, try to regain it as soon as possible, because your missiles will reacquire your target if you can get the lock back.
Keep in mind that targeting an enemy will not guarantee a hit. If your target moves behind cover, your missiles will hit the cover.
So when should you use LRMs? There are two basic functions - adding damage, and forcing your enemy to take cover. When you want your missiles to hit your target, ask yourself the following questions:
Will I be able to keep a lock on my target for the entire duration of the missile flight, either because I have line of sight on them or a team mate does?
Is there a clear path for my missiles to avoid terrain?
If the answer is yes to both these questions your missiles will probably hit. Keep in mind that missiles can go over hills. The chance for missiles to hit over a hill or obstacle is related to the angle between the top of the obstacle and the target. So a target immediately behind a tall building won't be hit, whereas a target some distance behind a small hill probably will.
Sometimes it is worth firing your missiles even if they won't hit. For example, an enemy has a good firing position on your team, but is near some cover. Even though your target can easily evade your missiles, the "Incoming Missiles" message will distract them and hopefully make them retreat to cover.
When choosing a target for missiles, prioritize targets that are tagged (denoted by a little red target over the target box), and targets already being attacked by your team. Hitting your enemy over and over with missiles will make it difficult for them to fight, giving your team mates an advantage.
If your enemy has an anti missile system, try to observe how many of your missiles are finding your target. If most of them are being stopped it might not be worth firing.
TANK MECHS (assults)
You are too slow to flank. You are too slow to scout. You are the battlefront. You are the holder of ground. Your role is to absorb damage and suppress the enemy. You must keep the enemy engaged while your faster, brawler mechs get into position. Take the heat, then when the enemy is distracted by the faster mechs that are flanking and disrupting their lines, use your powerful weapons to kill.
Keep in mind that you don't need to get hit by the enemy weapons, just make them shoot at you. Be the target so that the lighter mechs aren't the target, then be the damage when the lights have disrupted the enemy lines.
Be wary of trying to kill fast mechs that get into your lines. You are too slow to aim at them effectively. Their small weapons will not do very much damage to you, so keep your guns at the enemy line and let your lights and mediums kill their scouts.
SOME QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
Do I have a good firing arc from my current position?
Am I positioned at a good range to utilize the weapons I have equipped?
Am I going to get surrounded if I stay here?
How long will it take to get to cover from my current position?
Where are my team mates and what are they doing?
Have fun
